Sea breeze, fresh seafood and century-old trams: Dalian is China's most romantic coastal city. This guide covers the best attractions, honest itineraries, where to eat and how to book your whole trip — all in one place.
Four experiences every first-time visitor should not miss — the essence of Dalian in a single afternoon's walk.
Asia's largest city square meets the sea — watch the sky turn gold over the waterfront while the city lights come on.
Built to a Parisian blueprint by Russian planners in 1898, Dalian's round squares are ringed with century-old European facades.
Blue crabs, sea urchin, grilled squid — Dalian's northern Chinese take on the seafood table, nearly always served cooked.
Climb aboard a tram that has run since 1898 — the "ding-dang" of the old carriage is the sound of old Dalian.
Dalian's signature experiences — the reasons travellers fall for this northern coastal city.
Dalian's bathing beaches — Fujiazhuang, Bangchuidao, Golden Pebble — offer clear water and soft sand. Not tropical, but a perfect summer day.
One of China's few female mounted police units patrols Dalian's streets — a unique and photogenic sight.
Skip the flight to Moscow — Dalian's Russian Style Street is lined with ornate facades, crafts and souvenirs.
Dalian's polar-marine park pairs an Asia-leading aquarium with playful dolphin shows — a highlight for families.
Close to Korea and Japan, Dalian serves some of the most authentic Japanese and Korean cuisine in northern China.
Every year the Fashion Festival, acacia blossom festival and fireworks festival turn Dalian's squares into a global stage.
May to September offers the best climate and scenery. The peak season runs from the late-May acacia blossom festival and export fair to the early-September International Fashion Festival. August brings the famous Beer Festival at Xinghai Square. From October the sea cools and the crowds thin — September–October is prime seaside fishing season.
July–August is the busiest window — hotels are pricier and harder to get. In May–June (outside holidays) rooms are easier to book and cheaper; serviced apartments are a great value option. Students and backpackers should look at Dalian's three youth hostels.
Northern cooking means a little more oil, salt and stir-frying than the south. But the sea delivers the real headline: the freshest, most varied seafood in China, served — unlike in the south — almost always cooked.
No, if you keep it simple. Small local restaurants with proper Dalian specialities are cheap, clean and plentiful — a budget traveller can eat well without spending much.
Winter (late Nov–early Mar, low around –14°C): down jacket, sweater, gloves, jeans, warm trousers, sturdy shoes. Spring (Mar–May, ~15°C): jacket, sweater, long sleeves. Summer (Jun–early Sep, up to 30–32°C): T-shirts, shorts, skirts, sandals, sun hat and sunglasses. Autumn (late Sep–early Nov, 16–20°C): light jacket, thin sweater.
Yes — Dalian's water is clean, though with more pebbles than Qingdao or Sanya, so pack sandals. Stick to the famous beaches: Fujiazhuang, Xinghai and Bangchuidao near the city, Golden Pebble further out. Go in summer when the water is warm.
Yes — see Day Trips: Bingyu Valley ("Guilin of the North", famous for its January ice-lantern festival) or Lüshun Naval Port, plus hot springs at Laotieshan, Anbo and Minghu in winter.
Everyone in Dalian speaks standard Mandarin, so there's no language barrier — though the strong, warm local accent and loud, friendly way of talking may take southerners a moment to get used to.

Dalian sits at the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula in northeast China — Bohai Sea to the northwest, Yellow Sea to the southeast, 260 islands and islets offshore. One of China's 14 open coastal cities, it is the country's northeastern gateway and a major international shipping, logistics and financial hub. Its oceanic warm-temperate monsoon climate means mild winters, cool summers and four clear seasons — annual average 10.5°C.
Humans have lived here for at least 17,000 years; the area belonged to the Liaodong commandery from the Warring States period through Han. In 1897 Russian engineers arrived with a blueprint of Paris, dreaming of a plaza-centred city in the East — they named it "Dalniy", the far city. In 1905 Japan took it and rendered the name in Chinese as Dalian. Today the round squares, Russian facades and century-old tram lines are the city's living memory.
