Do I need to book Dalian hotels in advance?

Short answer
July–August is the busiest window — hotels are pricier and harder to get, so book early. In May–June (outside holidays) rooms are easier to find and cheaper; serviced apartments are a great value option. Students and backpackers should look at Dalian's three youth hostels (from ¥45 a bed).
