'North Guilin for the mountains, south Beihai for the silver sand' — a subtropical coast of 24 km of white quartz beach, China's largest volcanic island, a century-old arcade street and the pearl-fishing harbour where the Maritime Silk Road once set sail.
On Weizhou Island, the sesame-sand flats of Wucai Beach (Caishen Ferry flat) flood at dawn and turn the red volcanic rock into a mirror of colour — the photographer's favourite wake-up in Guangxi.
The volcanic crater geopark at Crocodile Hill on Weizhou is the island's centrepiece — a 25 sq km island born of recent eruptions, with sea-eroded cliffs, lava platforms and the Piglet Ridge rock.
24 km of quartz sand that stays soft underfoot and squeaks — 'long flat beach, fine white sand, warm clean water, gentle waves, no sharks'. At night the 'Chao' steel sculpture erupts in a fountain of 5,200 jets.
Rent a bicycle (about RMB 20 a day) or an electric moped (about RMB 60) and loop the island — the slow way to the church, the coves and the sunset cliffs, with the sea on every side.
Weizhou's visibility runs 8 metres and more — snorkel, shore dive or boat dive among coral at Piglet Ridge, Crocodile Mouth, Shipanhe and the Cliff, in water no deeper than 18 m. About RMB 120–200.
Beihai is one of China's four great fishing grounds — mantis shrimp, prawns, sandworm and the 200-year-old shrimp cake. The further from the beach you eat, the cheaper it gets; ask local families to cook your catch.
China's largest and youngest volcanic island, 36 nautical miles off the coast and 25 sq km of lava, coral and Hakka villages. Photographers arrive at Wucai Beach before dawn; the tide pools reflect the rising sun off the red rock.
The 'No.1 Beach Under Heaven' — 24 km of powder-fine quartz from Dajiaoshan to Qiaogang, with the steel 'Chao' sphere and its 5,250-nozzle musical fountain, four shows a night.
Rising above the low houses of Shengtang village, a late-19th-century French Gothic church built entirely from island coral and volcanic rock, with a bell cast in 1889 — one of four great Chinese Catholic churches of its age.
Zhuhai Road, begun in 1883: 1.44 km of grey qilou arcade buildings, their arched windows and carved balustrades a blend of Chinese and Portuguese-French colonial taste, now lined with shrimp-cake stalls and cafes.
A coastal 'ocean forest' of stilt-rooted mangroves alive with egrets and mudskippers — the kind of wetland where the dugong (the legendary mermaid) still grazes the seagrass offshore.
'West pearls are not as good as east, and east not as good as south' — Hepu has pearl-fished for 2,000 years. Pair a strand of nanzhu with a table of mantis shrimp, prawns and white-boiled sandworm.
April to November. April–May and October are the sweet spots: clear skies, cooler UV, low crowds. July–August is hot and typhoon season — check the forecast because ferries stop at force-7 wind. December–March is low season: windy, cold water, ferries unreliable, but quiet and cheap.

At the Waisha Dragon-Mother Temple (built 1823), fishermen anchor their boats bow-first to the temple on lunar festival days — the 15th and 16th of the first month, and the 16th of the 12th — to burn incense and pray for a safe sea.
Beihai's hotel base is mature, and the villa-resort cluster beside Silver Beach is the signature choice — a 3–5 minute walk to the sand. Beihai Fucheng Airport is one of Guangxi's three main airports, with direct flights to Beijing, Shanghai and Changsha — though frequencies are limited, so most visitors connect through Nanning Wuxu or Guilin Liangjiang. The airport bus runs to the Minhang Building (Beibu Gulf West Road) for ~RMB 10 in 30 minutes; a taxi is about RMB 60.
Beihai station sits on Beijing Road in the city centre (bus 2 to Beibu Gulf Square). The direct service runs mainly to Nanning — an express of about three hours, departing around 13:00. From Nanning you connect to the whole rail network. Station enquiries: +86 779 320 9898.
Beihai Main Station (Beibu Gulf East Road, buses 1/3/8 · +86 779 202 2094) runs to Nanning every 20 minutes (~3 h, ~RMB 60), to Guilin at 08:30/10:00 and 21:00/22:00 (~7 h, ~RMB 182), and on to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhanjiang and Guiyang. Cycle rickshaws RMB 2–5; chartered 7-seat vans about RMB 100–150 a day.
Beihai is the home of the South Pearl — 'west pearls are not as good as east, and east not as good as south'. Hepu has pearl-fished for 2,000 years from seven historic beds, and the legend of the pearl returned to Hepu is told here. Buy at the Nanzhu Palace and the aquatic market; bargain to 40–50% and check the lustre.
More than a hundred stalls of dried seafood — shellfish, dried fish, sea cucumber, abalone and shark-fin. Bargain hard (aim for 40–50%) and inspect, smell and taste before you buy, as the goods are perishable.
The city's commercial centre: the Banlian, Aodong, Xinli and Guotong shopping centres clustered by Beibu Gulf Square, open 09:30–22:30 — the easiest one-stop for snacks and gifts.
Zhuhai Road Old Street for shrimp cakes and Vietnamese snacks; Qiaogang style street for the sweet soups, rice rolls and cured-meat stalls of the former refugee township.

Weizhou has only a rural credit cooperative and no ATM — withdraw all the cash you need before boarding. Mobile signal is good on the crossing and island, though it can weaken on the Haikou run; settle anything important before you sail.
Mandarin works everywhere. Locals speak Lianzhou dialect and, in Qiaogang, Vietnamese-influenced speech; the boat people sing in Cantonese-based salt-water folk songs.
Subtropical marine monsoon: average 22.9°C, extremes 37.1°C and 2°C. Sunscreen is mandatory in season. Beihai is a low-cost city by coastal standards — snacks RMB 4–10, seafood dinner RMB 50–100 pp, and only the ferry, diving and aquarium carry the tourist markup.
The coastal sea-forest on its boardwalk — egrets, mudskippers and dugong habitat, half a day from the city, ticket plus cart about RMB 60.

View the plan →Weizhou sailings stop at force-7 wind and in typhoon weather. Check the forecast (121) the night before and book a flexible return — July and August are the riskiest months.
There is no ATM on the island, only a rural credit cooperative. Withdraw everything you need for the ferry, bike, diving and seafood before boarding.
Beihai seafood is cheapest farther from the beach. Ignore taxi-driver-recommended restaurants (they take commission); eat at the Qiaogang dapaidangs or have local families cook your market catch.
The tropical UV is strong and the volcanic rock at Wucai and Dishui is sharp — bring reef sandals, a hat and high-factor sunscreen, especially on the island cycle.
On quiet empty beaches, unofficial collectors may ask RMB 10 a head. It is not an official charge — politely decline and move on.
Beihai sits on the north-eastern shore of the Beibu Gulf in southern Guangxi — east of Guangdong, facing Hainan across the sea to the south and Vietnam to the west, with a coastline of more than 500 km. It is a subtropical marine monsoon climate: mild, rainy and humid, averaging 22.9°C, with extremes of 37.1°C and 2°C. The seawater is graded national first-class and the air among the freshest of any Chinese city.
More than 2,000 years ago, in the Han dynasty, Hepu (modern Beihai) was one of the original departure ports of the Maritime Silk Road — official fleets sailed from here along the Indochinese coast to the Indian Ocean. The county of Hepu has been a seat of commandery rule since the Han, and the Wenchang Pagoda and the thousand Han tombs around it still stand. In 1876, by the Chefoo Convention, Beihai was opened as a treaty port alongside Yichang, Wuhu and Wenzhou — which is why the Old Street arcade wears its colonial air. The city took its name from the sea to its north, and was liberated on 4 December 1949.
Guangxi is proud of two lines: 'north, the mountains of Guilin; south, the silver beach of Beihai.' Beihai numbers itself among the 'three seas and one gate' — Zhuhai, Beihai, Weihai and Xiamen — the four most livable coastal cities of China.
