'Guilin's scenery is the best under heaven' — a water-colour landscape of karst peaks, bamboo rafts and misty rivers, with the old lanes of the Jingjiang Princes' City, the rafts of the Yulong River, the terraces of Longji and the rice-noodle breakfast that starts every Guilin day.
Ride the 22 km essence stretch from Yangdi to Xingping past Nine Horses Hill, the Yellow Cloth Reflection and the very peaks printed on the RMB 20 note — 'the boat sails on blue waves, and men walk inside a painting'.
An afternoon on two wheels through the 8 km country road to Moon Hill — karst peaks, rice paddies, the Big Banyan Tree and, in March, walls of yellow rapeseed flowers.
Inside the Ming-dynasty walls of the Jingjiang Princes' City you can wander the courtyards for free, then climb the 306 steps of Duxiu Peak — 'the pillar under the southern sky' — for the city view that gave Guilin its famous couplet.
When the lights come on, the Sun and Moon Towers double themselves in Rong Lake and the Guilin evening belongs to slow walkers — the best show in the city costs nothing.
Guilin is calm, but the Longjing River adds a proper white-water thrill — about an hour and a half of rapids, best booked by phone first because departures are limited in low water.
99.99% of the 'Guilin rice noodles' outside the city are not the real thing. In Guilin itself, order a bowl of lu cai fen (dry mixed noodles with braised pork) for about RMB 5 and understand the city's love affair.
Every peak along the river has its own name and story — 'wish to be a Guilin man, not an immortal', the old saying runs. A bamboo raft between Yangdi and Xingping, or a full 4.5-hour cruise boat from Mopanshan Dock, is the defining Guilin experience.
The 16 km round trip from Yangshuo to Moon Hill is made for bicycles: flat, smooth and lined with the city's best scenery, plus the Big Banyan Tree Park (¥20) and Julong Lake (¥68) along the way.
Built for the Ming prince Zhu Shouqian in 1392, with intact walls, gates and the Duxiu Peak in its courtyard, the Princes' City is where the couplet 'Guilin's scenery is best under heaven' was first carved in stone.
Man-made or not, the night scene of Rong Lake, Shan Lake and the Sun-Moon Towers is the perfect after-dinner stroll — Guilin's citizens at their most relaxed.
The loudest hour and a half in a quiet city: rapids, spray and shouts, about 90 minutes from Xingping — a proper counterweight to all that serenity.
The city's breakfast of choice, a 'love at first sight' locals defend fiercely: silky rice noodles, savoury braised marinade, crispy pork, peanuts and pickles, mixed dry with a splash of broth.
April to October is the classic window. Summer means rafting weather; the two weeks after the lunar date of 15 April flood the Longji terraces into mirrors; mid-autumn produces the famous double moon reflected beside Elephant Trunk Hill. Winter is quiet and cold — around 0°C in January — but empty of crowds.
The 'Guilin Three Treasures' — chili sauce, fermented bean curd and Sanhua liquor — plus sweet osmanthus tea and cakes, Shatian pomelo, ginkgo, water chestnut cake, persimmon cakes from Yangshuo and the big Lipu taro. Handicrafts include Guilin embroidery, combs, paper umbrellas and painted fans.
Yangshuo is a holy site for rock climbers — routes of every grade on limestone faces, with beginner walls by Butterfly Spring (~¥120/hour with gear and a coach). Otherwise: rafting (Longjing River ¥150, Nine Horses Canyon ¥180, gentle Yulong River), Li River hiking (5–6 hours Yangdi to Xingping) and the Ten Li Gallery cycle.
For a tourist city, no. A rice-noodle breakfast is RMB 3.5–5, a set meal about RMB 7, street snacks even less; a two-bedroom flat rents for RMB 600–800 a month. The two big spends are the Li River boat (RMB 190–450 by class) and Impression Liu Sanjie (RMB 188–680).
Very. Guilin Liangjiang International Airport is 28 km from the city with 60+ domestic and international routes; the rail network links the Beijing–Guangzhou line with the Guizhou–Guangxi and Zhiliu branches; and express buses reach every county and neighbouring province.

Mandarin works everywhere. The local Guilin dialect is a southern relative of the northern speech, once fixed as the 'southern official language' of the imperial exams — most visitors can follow its drift.
Guilin is a mid-to-low cost city by Chinese standards: noodles ¥3.5–5, set meals ~¥7, monthly rent for a two-bedroom flat ¥600–800. Only the tourist services — cruises, shows, some souvenirs — carry the classic tourist-city markup.
Guilin is home to 28 minority groups including Zhuang, Hui, Miao, Yao and Dong, many keeping their dress, food, festivals and languages — the loudest celebration is Zhuang San Yue San each spring.
Up to the Longsheng mountains for the Ping'an terraces — mirrors after mid-May, gold at harvest, with bamboo-tube rice and water liquor for lunch. Early start required; about 2 hours each way.

At Yangdi and Xingping the riverside 'helpers' can be pushy and the tip expectations flexible. Agree the price and the route before boarding, and treat the printed segment prices (Yangdi–Xingping ¥95–120) as your reference.
At the stations and hotel doors, waiting taxis often refuse the meter — flag down a moving empty cab instead, and read the menu before you sit in any driver-recommended restaurant.
Rafting runs are limited and shrink in low water — phone the scenic area to confirm the day's departure times before making the trip from Xingping.
Guilin sits at 25°N in the southwest of the Nanling range, in northeastern Guangxi — a classic karst (limestone) landscape of solitary peaks and caves at an average elevation of about 150 m. The climate is a subtropical monsoon one: mild, rainy, with long frost-free seasons; July–August can pass 30°C, January hovers near 0°C. April to October is the golden travel window.
People lived here as early as the Stone Age caves of Baojiyan. In 214 BC the Qin emperor Shi Huang unified the south and named a new commandery 'Guilin' — and drove the Lingqu Canal at Xing'an to join the Xiang and Li rivers, making Guilin the pivot of water-borne trade between central China and the sea. In 621 Li Jing built the city walls below Duxiu Peak; in 1392 the Ming enfeoffed the Jingjiang princes here, and their city — with Duxiu Peak inside — survives to this day. Guilin served as Guangxi's capital from 1911 to 1940 and again after 1945, the city's garrison defending it famously in November 1944. Two thousand years of ink have left more than 2,000 carved inscriptions on its cliffs, including the couplet 'Guilin's scenery is best under heaven' itself.
'The river is an emerald ribbon, the peaks are jade hairpins' — the Li River has drawn poets since the Tang. Marshal Chen Yi's line still echoes on every postcard: 'I would rather be a Guilin man than an immortal.'
