Sanya Travel Guide — Coconut Bays at China's Tropical Edge

China's southernmost resort city: silver crescents of Yalong Bay, the giant coastal rocks of Tianya Haijiao, a 108-metre Guanyin standing on the South China Sea, the clearest diving island off Hainan, and 20 kilometres of coconut palms catching the sunset — 'end of the sky, corner of the sea'.

Sanya Bucket Listthe little things that make this coast unforgettable

1 · Dive Wuzhizhou Island's coral

China's first dedicated diving base: water visibility up to 27 metres over untouched coral reefs, plus jet-skis, banana boats and semi-submersible sightseeing boats. The 15-minute ferry from Houhai pier is just the start of the day.

2 · Watch the sunset from the coconut walkway

The 20-kilometre Coconut Dream Corridor loops Sanya Bay — palm-framed sunsets, fishermen hauling in the nets, and a sky that turns pink over the sea. Free, and the best evening in the city.

3 · Stand before the 108-metre Sea Guanyin

Walk the bridge out to the triple-aspect white Guanyin standing on an islet in Nanshan Bay, then wander the Tang-style Nanshan Temple behind it — a moment to quiet the mind, as the guidebook puts it.

4 · Say 'I love you' at Tianya Haijiao

The boulders carved 'Tianya', 'Haijiao', 'Nantian Yizhu' and 'Haipan Nantian' at the foot of Maling Hill — for centuries the symbolic end of China. 'Accompany her to Tianya Haijiao, love her until the end of time.'

5 · Float the cable bridge in the rainforest

The Guojianglong cable bridge where Ge You carried Shu Qi in If You Are the One II, suspended over primary tropical forest above Yalong Bay — then the mountain road to the Red-roofed Ridge viewpoint for the whole crescent below.

6 · Eat seafood bought at the First Market

Pick your own lobster, crab and mantis shrimp at Sanya's biggest wet market, hand it to one of the processing stalls on the neighbouring lane, and eat the catch cooked the Sanya way — the whole ritual is half the fun.

Top Highlightswhat Sanya does best

No.1 · Yalong Bay's crescent beach 亚龙湾

The 'Number One Bay Under Heaven' — seven kilometres of silver sand, water temperature holding above 23°C, and the softest beach in Sanya. The beach and underwater world are free; every resort, water-sport and golf facility clusters along it.

No.2 · Diving at Wuzhizhou Island 蜈支洲岛

What locals call China's Maldives: an untouched-island marine reserve with 27-metre visibility, the country's best soft-coral communities, and the full menu of sea sports — shore dives, boat dives, night dives, jet-skis and glass-bottom boats.

No.3 · The Nanshan Sea Guanyin 南山海上观音

A 108-metre white triple-aspect Guanyin on a lotus pedestal rising from the bay, reached by a causeway, backed by the largest Buddhist complex built in China in 50 years — imitation-Tang halls, the diet-be veggie 'Yuanqi Lou' lunch, and forested headlands.

No.4 · Tianya Haijiao's coastal rocks 天涯海角

The rocks that gave China its name for 'the uttermost end': giant sea-worn boulders carved through the Qing dynasty, a viewing pavilion over surf and reef, and the wedding-festival atmosphere every November.

No.5 · Tropical rainforest over the bay 热带天堂森林公园

The forested slopes wrapping Yalong Bay: cable bridge, bird's-nest villas, Red-roofed Ridge lookout and the six rainforest wonders — strangler figs, aerial roots, old-stem flowering and buttress roots — in two loops you can walk or drive.

No.6 · Seafood straight off the boat 海鲜

Mango clams, Hele crab, lobster and sea urchin bought at the First Market, cooked at a processing stall, chased with a fresh coconut — the Hainan four famous dishes (Wenchang chicken, Hele crab, Jiaji duck, Dongshan mutton) for the table.

Questions & Answerswhat travellers always ask about Sanya

When is the best time to go?

November to March — winter sun and sea still warm enough to swim; the city's peak season, so book early. June is the hottest and quietest. Winter sea temperature holds 18–22°C, and year-round you pack swimsuit, sunglasses, sunscreen and an umbrella.

What sea activities are there?

Diving is the headline (Wuzhizhou, Yalong Bay underwater world, Xi Island), plus motorboats, para-sailing, banana boats, platform fishing, deep-sea angling (~RMB 150/hour), sailing, windsurfing and sightseeing submarines. First-timers start with shore dives and practise equalising their ears.

How do I pick tropical fruit?

Smell, look, squeeze — ripe fruit smells sweet, has no dark patches, and the deeper the dimple at the stem end, the sweeter. Red coconuts are the top grade, and coconut milk between 10:00 and 12:00 is sweetest. Don't overeat mango, pineapple or lychee; diabetics should skip starfruit.

Is Sanya expensive?

Rooms and seafood are seasonal and premium; everyday shopping sits mid-to-high. Beaches are free, and a fresh coconut costs RMB 3–5. The regulated price references (mango clams RMB 10/jin, Hele crab RMB 40–50/jin, lobster RMB 180/jin) are published so you know the fair range.

How do I duty-free shop?

Only air-travellers leaving Hainan by plane qualify: if leaving from Sanya Phoenix, finish purchases at least 6 hours before the flight; from Haikou Meilan, one day ahead. The shop delivers to the airport for pickup at the gate — Hainan specialties themselves are not duty-free.

Can you book the whole trip through ToursChinaTravel?

Language

Mandarin works everywhere. Hainanese is the common local tongue — a Minnan-related speech brought by southern settlers a thousand years ago. Li, Miao, Hui and Danjia speeches survive in the minority communities; staff at resorts and airport counters handle English.

Sun & health

High-SPF waterproof sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and an umbrella — UV rays pierce cloud cover, so sunscreen even on overcast days. Bring repellent for the rainforest. Tap water is fine for brushing; drink bottled water.

Cost level

Beaches and public transport are cheap (coconut ¥3–5, bus ¥1–18); resorts, seafood and island tickets carry the premium. Budget roughly ¥800–2,000 per person per day all-in, excluding long-haul flights.

People & minorities

Han, Li, Miao and Hui people make up the city's 560,000 residents; minorities are about 41% of the population, led by 188,000 Li people. Respect temple dress codes at Nanshan (no big incense; don't step on thresholds).

Travel Tipsfive things to remember

1 · Buy seafood at the market, not the beach

Beachfront restaurants mark up tenfold over the wet market. First Market or the fishing-port dock (after ~19:00) is the fair price; drain your bagged seafood and ask at three stalls before buying. Processing stalls charge a modest cooking fee.

2 · Catch the Wuzhizhou ferry early

Ferries run every 15 minutes, but the last landing is 16:00 and the last return 17:30 — aim to be on the island by 10:00. Bring food, water and repellent; the island's own restaurants are expensive and there is no camping or fishing gear allowed.

3 · Book the peak season early

November to March is winter-escape season — resorts sell out and rates climb. Reserve rooms through our team at least two weeks ahead. June is hot but empty and cheapest; swimwear, sunglasses, sunscreen and an umbrella belong in every season's bag.

4 · Taxis: metered or agreed fare

Drivers at Yalong Bay may push you back to town at night; agree the price before getting in. To west-coast sights (Nanshan, Tianya) it is cheaper to take bus 25 or the tourist line A than to charter.

5 · Equalise your ears before diving

First-timers start with shore dives. Practise pinching your nose and gently blowing, or swallowing, while descending; signal the instructor immediately if you feel pain — never push through it.

'Oriental Hawaii' — no frost, no snow, flowers year-round.

A brief history

Called Yazhou in antiquity, this was the symbolic edge of China — 'Tianya Haijiao'. Under the Qin it was Xiang Commandery; the Han set up Zhuya Commandery at today's Yazhou town; the Sui Linzhen, the Tang Zhenzhou. The Tang monk Jianzhen, blown ashore here on his way to Japan, preached at Nanshan before his sixth crossing succeeded; the Song official Zhao Ding and the textile pioneer Huang Daopo — who learned weaving from Li women here — later made Sanya their refuge. In the 20th century the city grew from a garrison port into China's premier tropical resort.

People & culture

Twenty-plus nationalities — Han, Li, Miao, Hui — share the coast. The Li people (188,000 in the city) hold the original rainforest culture; the March Third festival, bamboo-pole dances and coconut-bamboo rice survive. The city's emblem is the Luhuitou ('deer turning back') statue — the legend of a Li hunter and the deer that became a girl, from which Sanya is nicknamed Deer City.
