Sanya's fame overshadows it, but Haikou is where you taste the island: century-old Nanyang arcades, a dormant volcanic crater at Shishan, coconut-lined beaches, morning teatime and all-night night markets. A round, mellow vintage — not the loud one.
The old street's "old-dad tea houses" — ordinary green or black tea for RMB 1–2 a cup, RMB 5 a pot, plus coffee, quail-egg stew, fried rice cakes and sweet snacks. Sit at a shared bench and out-stare the afternoon: this is the rhythm of Haikou.
Lie on a deck chair at Holiday Beach, with coconut palms on both sides of the road and the Qiongzhou Strait beyond — the music-fountain square, surfboard rentals and the sunset are all free.
Haikou's west coast is a young person's playground — surf lessons, motorboats and beach volleyball at the same strip where the sunset barbecue square fires up after dark.
Pick a slow morning, wander Deshengsha, Zhongshan and Boai roads, read the century-old balconies, porcelain flowers and Baroque parapets, and snack your way down Shuixiangkou Lane.
At Shishan, 15 km from the city, a rift-valley basalt crater you can actually walk into — one of China's few Holocene dormant volcanoes, ringed by tropical rainforest.
Beer, small dishes, Hainan rice noodles, every kind of barbecue, hotpot, qingbuliang and seafood — Haikou is a city that never sleeps, and the midnight supper is its most important meal.
Bicycle bells down a century-old block — Nanyang arcades with painted parapets, ground-floor colonnades for shoppers, and a trade life that never stopped. At Shuixiangkou Lane: Hainan pickled noodles, beef-belly rice, pig-trotter rice, chicken and duck rice, fried zongzi and Ding'an noodle soup.
No crowds, only the sound of sea breeze — 6.2 km of white sand from Xixiu Beach to the Wuyuan River mouth, palm groves, swimming, surf, sunset and the open-air seafood barbecue square.
Wake up late, drift to a late breakfast-tea, then spend the evening talking and singing with friends — Haikou's slow life is a deliberate argument against hurry.
At Shishan town, 15 km west of the city: a basalt crater active within the last 10,000 years, wrapped in tropical forest — with the famous Shishan slow-raised mutton grown on its volcanic soil.
China's largest mangrove reserve — 16 families, 32 species of mangrove over a funnel-shaped tidal coast, boat trips to Wild Pineapple Island and the world-rare "underwater village" land-collapse ruins.
Rice noodles dressed with more than a dozen savoury toppings — the city's night-life fuel, sold from stalls at Haixiu Road, West Gate Market, East Gate Market, Yilong Street and Moon Bay. Add coconut rice, fish pot and qingbuliang.
October to the following May — the sea is calm and the weather mild while the north freezes; the Hainan International Coconut Festival and the Junpo Festival fall in this window. May to October is the rainy season (September the peak), and eastern Hainan is on the typhoon track — watch storm alerts, since strong typhoons can cancel flights and stop ferries. Off-season Haikou is quiet and cheaper.
Breathable bag, sweat-absorbent quick-dry clothes (laundry dries overnight), a light jacket even in winter, strong sunscreen, sunglasses and an umbrella, plus anti-sunstroke, stomach and anti-mosquito medicine. Don't forget your swimsuit, cap and goggles.
Drink a little rice wine or vinegar with seafood, not beer (uric acid); avoid iced drinks and watermelons for an hour after; no swimming right after eating. Mango and pineapple are easy to over-eat — they cause internal heat; never eat pineapple or starfruit on an empty stomach, and diabetics must avoid starfruit. Red coconuts are the sweetest, picked at noon.
The Hainan Four Famous Dishes — Wenchang chicken, Jiaji duck, Dongshan goat and Hele crab — all available in Haikou, plus Shishan slow-raised mutton, Qukou seafood, Four-Treasure Qiongshan tofu and vegetarian stew pot. Breakfast-tea runs busy until past 10:00; the night market is the city's great meal.
Very. Meilan Airport is 25 km out with 60+ routes to mainland cities, Hong Kong, Macau, Fukuoka, Jeju, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia; the eastern-ring high-speed railway reaches Sanya in two hours; coaches and ferries fan out across the island and to the mainland. City buses cost RMB 1–2 and reach every central sight.

Haikou is a migrant city — Mandarin works everywhere. Life is mid-to-low cost: a laoban-tea cup ¥1–2, a noodle bowl a few yuan, a fish pot ~¥20, a seafood dinner ~¥30 pp. Shops close around 22:30.
Tropical oceanic monsoon: long sunshine, average year-round 24.2°C (high average 28.6°C, low average 17.7°C). Spring warm and dry, summer hot with rain and typhoons, autumn cool, winter dry with occasional cold snaps.
Ignore people handing out travel leaflets and flight-ticket cards at night — don't buy tickets or tours from them. Buy souvenirs after comparing prices; watch the "butcher" markup at seafood restaurants.
Out 15 km to Shishan: walk the Fengluling crater rim and lava tunnels, lunch on Shishan slow-raised mutton, then back for a Holiday Beach sunset. Half to a full day.

Eastern Hainan is on the typhoon track from May to October, worst in September and July. Storm alerts can cancel flights and ferries — build in buffer days, or come November to March.
Anyone pressing travel cards or cheap flight tickets on you at night is a scam — book through your hotel desk, a licensed agency or our team. Shops close around 22:30.
Dried goods at East Gate are already cheap; pearls, crystal and tortoiseshell on Haixiu Avenue are marked up for tourists — take an expert, and compare stall to stall.
The eastern-ring train from Haikou East (or Meilan Airport station) reaches Sanya in two hours — skip the long coach, book seats in advance, and flip the window seat for the coast view.
Haikou lies on Hainan island's north coast, roughly heart-shaped and flat, facing the Qiongzhou Strait — 18 nautical miles across to Hai'an in Guangdong. It borders Wenchang to the east and south, Ding'an to the south, and Chengmai to the west; 60.6 km east to west and 62.5 km north to south over 2,304.84 km². A tropical oceanic monsoon climate with long sunshine and a 24.2°C yearly average.
Haikou grew as the port of old Qiongzhou — the arcade old street is the proof: built by overseas Nanyang returnees in the late Qing and early republican decades, its oldest Four-Paifang block already six centuries old. Five Officials Temple commemorates the Tang–Song exiles who brought learning to the south; Qiongtai Academy (1705) honours Qiu Jun, Hainan's foremost scholar. Xiuying Battery (1891) ranks with Shanghai's Wusong, Tianjin's Dagu and Guangzhou's Humen as one of China's four great coastal forts. After 1988 Haikou became the capital of Hainan Province, China's newest — and newest-free-trade-zone — island province.
Locals say Sanya is the beautiful younger sister everyone photographs; Haikou is the mellow vintage you return to. Morning laoban-tea, a beach chair at sunset, and a midnight supper of Hainan noodles — the island lived at its own pace.
