A thousand-year-old Hakka city on the Pearl River Delta edge: West Lake beside the lanes, the Daoist peaks of Luofu Mountain, the white-sand bays of Xunliao and Shuangyue, Nankunshan hot springs on the Tropic of Cancer, and the slow, salty joys of Dongjiang cuisine.
One of the cleanest bays on hundreds of kilometres of the eastern Guangdong coast — fine, white sand underfoot, clear blue water, and the first-class sun and air the locals brag about. 'Stone beautiful, water clear, sand white' is how the bay describes itself.
Luofu Mountain's 1,296 m main peak is the best viewpoint over the whole region — Sima Qian compared Luofu to the 'Yue Mountain', and the view from the clouds on a clear day is the number-one Huizhou memory.
Huizhou is one of China's most concentrated hot-spring cities, with three A-rated spring resorts alone. After a long day on the road, a soak in the mineral pools is the local way to unwind.
A faithful replica of Austria's lakeside Hallstatt, dropped in the hills above Boluo — church spire, flower-basket iron bridge and painted houses straight out of a storybook. Come in the soft light of late afternoon.
Dongjiang salt-baked chicken, stuffed tofu and pork belly with preserved mustard greens — the Hakka trio that has defined Huizhou banquets for centuries. The meicai alone has been grown here since the late Ming.
The cable car is the easiest way over Luofu's ridgelines — a bird's-eye sweep of the 432 peaks, 980 waterfalls and the seventh Daoist cave-heaven, without breaking a sweat.
Luofu Mountain's 1,296 m summit is the highest of Guangdong's four great peaks, and Sima Qian already rated it the 'Yue Mountain'. Cable car up, then the last stretch on foot — the whole of the Pearl River Delta spreads below the clouds.
Three national-A hot-spring resorts cluster in and around Longmen — iron-rich springs, mountain-side pools and five themed bathing zones. A hot-spring night is the classic Huizhou winter treat.
A full-scale replica of Hallstatt, Austria, beside its own lake above Boluo. The church, the flower-basket iron bridge and the painted waterfront houses make it the most surprising afternoon in the region.
Huizhou is one of Guangdong's great Hakka heartlands: ground-tea that 'relieves summer heat and strengthens the stomach', Guanyin greens from Nankunshan, and preserved-vegetable pork that tastes of four hundred years of migration.
When the subtropical summer presses down, Huizhou's gorges are the answer — Leigong Gorge, Ping'an Gorge, Xiangshui and Kunshan Gorge all offer white-water runs, with change of clothes in the car.
Up over the forested ridgeline in minutes, with every cliff and waterfall falling away beneath — the gentlest way to see why Luofu is called the 'first mountain of Lingnan'.
Any time. Huizhou has a south-subtropical, near-tropical climate with plentiful rain, strong sun and an annual mean of about 22 C — the guide's own line is that 'every season suits a visit'. For beaches, June to September is the classic window; for Luofu and Nankunshan, the drier autumn and winter are clearest.
Luofu sweet tea and hundred-herb oil, Nankunshan Guanyin greens, Dongjiang glutinous rice wine, Longmen bamboo toothpicks and Boluo crisp candy. Above all, Huizhou meicai — the preserved mustard green from Aipo town that made meicai kou rou famous.
Beaches and water sports at Xunliao (banana boats, kayaks, yachts, jet-skis, coral diving), white-water rafting on the eastern gorges, the Luofu cable car, forest walks at Nankunshan, and the turtle-reserve coast at Huidong's Gangkou.
No. Standard city hotels run RMB 200–260, budget rooms from RMB 138, and the guide's own two-day budget is about RMB 800 a head. Ticket prices are modest: West Lake is free, Luofu RMB 48–60, the turtle reserve RMB 15.
Very. The Jingjiu and Guangmeishan railways meet here, coaches link every county and Guangzhou/Shenzhen/Hong Kong, and the city buses reach every central sight. The city's own airport was still being rebuilt when this guide was written — most visitors fly to Shenzhen or Guangzhou and transfer.

West Lake & the Hallstatt-style town. Morning: Huizhou West Lake (free, 07:00–22:30 summer) — the five lakes, six bridges and the Sizhou Pagoda where Su Dongpo once looked out; hire a pedal boat or stroll the Su Causeway. Afternoon: bus out to the Hallstatt-style town above Boluo (take the Huizhou–Luofu or Huizhou–Shilong bus to Boluo, walk 800 m towards Tangquan) — the church spire, flower-basket iron bridge and painted waterfront. Shoot in the soft light after 16:00, and bring water (the town has few shops). Evening: dinner of meicai kou rou and salt-baked chicken back in Huicheng.
Xunliao Bay beach day. Take the direct bus from Henan'an Station (every 30 min, 07:00–19:00, ¥30, ~2 h) out to Xunliao Bay (Jinwan Bay ¥8, Deze Garden ¥10, 08:00–18:00). White sand underfoot, clear blue water — choose a banana boat, kayak or jet-ski, or take the yacht out to Coral Island for a guided dive. Lunch on fresh seafood by the beach, walk the reefs of Mozi Stone Park through the afternoon, then the last bus back around 19:00. Prefer to linger? Spend the night at the Bijia Sea-View Resort and watch the sunset over the bay.

Ride the cable car over the ridgeline, visit the herb gardens and Daoist temples where Ge Hong once gathered medicine, then walk the last stretch to Feiyun Ding (1,296 m) for the cloud-sea view over the Pearl River Delta. Stay at the Lianhu Mountain Villa inside the scenic area, or return to Boluo for the night.
Xiangxi Fort & Nankunshan hot springs. Morning: drive south to Longmen's Xiangxi Fort (5 sq km of manor-fort folk architecture) and float the Xiangxi River by bamboo raft past bamboo groves, the Wuzhai fort, the Liao clan hall and the iron-chain bridge (~2 h). Afternoon: on to the Nankunshan Hot-Spring Grand View Garden — five themed bathing zones, massage pools and a man-made waterfall. Dinner and an overnight at the hot-spring resort.
Nankunshan forest. Morning inside Nankunshan (09:00–17:00): the Chuanlong Waterfall , the natural massage pools of Guanyin Pool and the rock-pools of Shihe, among 60,000 mu of reserve forest. Lunch on Guanyin greens , rock frog and longevity tea , then the direct bus back to Huizhou (3 a day, ~3 h). Bring a warm layer — the mountain nights are cool.
The coast properly: Xunliao's reefs, the twin crescent bays of Shuangyue, the turtle-reserve beach and Pinghai's 600-year-old walled city. Highlights: Xunliao Bay · Shuangyue Bay · Turtle reserve · Pinghai View day-by-day plan →
Xunliao Bay. Direct bus from Henan'an Station (every 30 min, ¥30, ~2 h) to Xunliao Bay (¥8–10, 08:00–18:00). White sand, clear water, banana boats and jet-skis; the yacht out to Coral Island for a guided dive. Evening: seafood by the beach and a night at a beach resort (Bijia Sea-View from ¥160).
Shuangyue Bay & the turtle reserve. Move east along the coast to Shuangyue Bay — climb Daxing Hill to the viewpoint for the famous double-crescent panorama (one bay calm, one rolling). Down at the shore, walk the fishing harbour and beaches. Continue to the Sea Turtle Nature Reserve (¥15) at Gangkou — China's only national turtle nesting beach; in summer watch the conservation work. Sunset over the crescent.
Pinghai Ancient City & home. Morning in Pinghai Ancient City — a Ming walled town of 1385 with four gate towers, the cross-shaped old street and Hakka brick houses. Then the coastal road back to Huizhou, or onward to Daya Bay for an island hop if time allows. Budget the afternoon for the bus or train home.
All three plans are bookable end-to-end by our team — see the full day-by-day Huizhou itineraries hub, or the day-trip pages for single-day options.

Summer's answer to the subtropical heat: choose between Leigong Gorge, Ping'an Gorge, Xiangshui, Shuilian Cave, Nanshan and Kunshan Gorge. Take a towel and a change of clothes, leave valuables in the car, and keep the life jacket on.
At Xunliao Bay the list runs to banana boats, kayaks, yachts, speedboats and jet-skis — and the bay's rare underwater coral lets certified divers slip down to Coral Island with an instructor. Daya Bay adds sailing, windsurfing and island hops to Lajia and Sanjiao islands.
Three national-A spring resorts anchor the region: Longmen Tiequan, Nankunshan Hot-Spring Grand View Garden (120,000 sq m of five themed bathing zones) and Huizhou Coastal Hot Spring. Nearer town, Xiaojinkou's Tangquan offers a quicker soak.
On Lantern Festival night the town gathers at the dance ground under firecracker crackle: dozens of young runners carry burning bamboo cables, then a dragon strung with fireworks takes the floor — dragon-head breathing fire and the whole sky lit up.

Huizhou's signature: pork belly steamed until glossy with sweet-salty preserved mustard greens from Aipo town, where meicai has been grown since the late Ming. Rich but not greasy — the dish that put Huizhou on every Cantonese banquet table.
Three hundred years of Hakka craft: chicken wrapped and baked in hot salt until the skin turns golden, crisp and the meat juicy, eaten with a sand-ginger salt dip. One of the Huizhou Three Treasures — 'crisp skin, smooth flesh, fragrant bones, deep taste'.
The third treasure: fresh tofu cubed and stuffed with minced pork, braised until the sauce is glossy — the dish the Hakka invented far from the wheat fields that gave them dumplings. At Xiao Yunlong (Futian town · +86 752 688 9988, ~¥80 pp) it is called 'mountain-water tofu' and is the house special.
From Nankunshan: Guanyin greens, red-back greens, rock frog and mountain-stream fish (fried crisp with ginger and spring onion), washed down with Nankunshan longevity tea. Also try fish-maw tofu pot and eight-treasure whole duck. For a farmhouse table, Zhucui Yuan (on the 220 county road by Dipai hot spring, Longmen, ~¥29 pp) serves mountain snail, Longmen chicken and stuffed tofu straight from the field.
When this guide was written, Huizhou's own military-civilian airport was being rebuilt, so most visitors fly into Shenzhen and take the onward coach — about 3 hours, around ¥56 — or fly to Guangzhou and catch the frequent Luofu or Huizhou coaches. Check current airport status when you book.
The Jingjiu and Guangmeishan railways meet at Huizhou, linked to the Huizhou Port line. Huizhou West Station (3 Yongtong Road, Huicheng · +86 752 582 2062) and Huizhou North Station (Xiaojinkou · +86 752 582 3020) are the two passenger stops.

Through services run to Guangzhou and Shenzhen; over ten direct through-buses a day link Huizhou with Hong Kong. Xunliao buses leave Henan'an Station every 30 min, 07:00–19:00, ¥30, ~2 h.
City buses are ¥2 (air-conditioned, card or cash) and reach every central sight, including West Lake (buses 1/2/5/7/11/19 to Fengshan lukou). Taxis start at ¥5 plus a ¥1 fuel surcharge after 2 km — about 600 cabs, mostly new Jettas and Citroens.

Sweet tea picked from Luofu's own wild tea plant and brewed by the mountain's tea makers — said to cool the body and aid digestion. The hundred-herb oil is pressed from over a hundred Luofu herbs, for internal or external use.
The city's most famous export: golden, fragrant, sweet and crisp preserved mustard, grown in Aipo town's Tuqiao village since the late Ming — the very leaf that makes meicai kou rou famous. Take a bag home for the kitchen.

Mandarin works everywhere. Locally you will hear Cantonese and the Hakka tongue — Huizhou is one of Guangdong's most concentrated Hakka settlements, and the old Hakka mountain songs and xiehouyu idioms are still alive in the villages.
A subtropical monsoon climate under the Tropic of Cancer: about 2,000 mm of rain a year and a 22 C average. The East and West Branch rivers run through the city; the north is mountainous, the centre and coast are low plains, and the east and west are hills. Land area 11,300 sq km, population about 3.7 million.
A relaxed mid-cost city: standard hotel rooms ¥200–260, budget hotels from ¥138, and the guide's own two-day all-in budget around ¥800 a head. Only the beach resorts and hot springs carry the resort markup.
The Hakka settled here little more than four hundred years ago yet made the place their own: Han opera ('the peony of the south'), seven-character mountain songs, a calendar of lunar festivals, and a kitchen of salt, steam and clay.
The white-sand beach, coral-diving reefs and water sports of Xunliao — a direct bus from Henan'an station, a beach day and sunset, back by evening.
View the plan →Up the cable car, the herb gardens and Daoist temples, then the climb to Feiyun Ding for the cloud-sea view — the 'first mountain of Lingnan' in one long day.
View the plan →The twin crescents from Daxing Hill, the fishing harbour, the turtle-reserve beach and the walled lanes of Pinghai — the Huidong coast's signature day out.
View the plan →The Hallstatt replica is new and lightly serviced — no convenience stores inside, and walking back to Boluo for a drink is a long way. Bring your own water, eat in Boluo town, and shoot in the soft light before 09:00 or after 16:00.
Night and day differ sharply on the mountain — take a warm layer even in summer. Hotels cluster in the Shangping (Xiaping) centre; book ahead in peak season, and don't expect big shops — stock up on snacks in Longmen town.
You will get wet. Take a towel and a full change, leave valuables in the car, keep the life jacket on and follow the marshals — Huizhou's gorges are meant to be fun, not reckless.
Huizhou's own airport was being rebuilt when this guide was written. Most travellers still fly into Shenzhen (coach ~3 h, ~¥56) or Guangzhou and transfer — reconfirm flights and airport shuttles at booking time.
The Shangping shops sell lingzhi, herbs, honey and green-plum wine, but genuinely wild mountain finds are rare. Agree prices, buy from reputable counters, and let our team steer you to honest suppliers.
Huizhou sits in south-eastern Guangdong on the north-east edge of the Pearl River Delta, facing Daya Bay on the South China Sea and bordering Shenzhen and Hong Kong — the 'eastern gateway of Guangdong'. The Tropic of Cancer crosses the city, with the East and West Branch rivers running through it: mountains to the north, low coastal plains in the middle, hills to east and west. About 2,000 mm of rain and a 22 C average each year.
A Guangdong historic city of more than 1,400 years, once called Xunzhou and then Zhenzhou — the political and cultural heart of the East River basin. It fell to the revolution on 14 October 1949, and grew from a county town to a county-level city, and finally to a prefecture-level city in February 1988. Today it administers Huicheng and Huiyang districts plus Huidong, Boluo and Longmen counties, and two national development zones.
The Hakka arrived from the east Guangdong, western Fujian and southern Jiangxi only four centuries ago, yet their culture dominates: Han opera (the 'southern peony'), seven-character mountain songs, a lunar calendar of village festivals, and a kitchen built around salt, steam and preserved vegetables — of which Huizhou meicai, grown in Aipo town since the late Ming, is the proudest.
