08:00

Bus 3 to Yungang Grottoes

From the railway station square, bus 3 runs direct (06:00–18:40, ¥3) — 16 km west to the Wuzhou Mountain cliffs. Buy tickets online in peak season.

09:00

Caves 16–20 — the Tanyao Five

The colossal seated Buddhas carved from 460 AD. Caves 5, 6 and 20 are the unmissables; allow 2.5–3 hours, no flash photography.

12:00

Lunch back in the old city

A ¥13 knife-cut noodle bowl at Dongfang Xiaomian, or the Yonghe Food City spread (¥74) near the Drum Tower.

13:30

Huayan Temple

The Liao dynasty monastery (¥80, 09:00–17:00) — east-facing halls in Khitan style and the Smiling Bodhisattva in the Sutra Library.

15:00

Shanhua Temple & the Nine Dragon Screen

Tang-layout Shanhua (¥50) then the 45.5-metre glazed dragon screen (¥10, 08:00–18:00) — the oldest in China, 250 years before Beijing.

16:30

The city wall at dusk

Climb the restored Ming ramparts (¥15) — the lantern towers come alive as the sun drops behind the loess hills.

19:00

Rabbit-head dinner

A braised rabbit-head supper at Tu Tou Wang (+86 352 2060 153, ¥37) — the true Datong evening.
