Kangding is the Tibetan gateway of western Sichuan - the capital of the Ganzi Prefecture, the town where the tea-horse road met the Sichuan-Tibet Highway (G318) and the birthplace of the folk song 'Kangding Love Song' that made its name around the world. At 2,600 m it is the first big plateau town after the Zheduo Pass (4,298 m), and everything beyond it - the Xinduqiao photography corridor, the Tagong grasslands, Mount Gongga's glacier valleys and the lakes of Mugecuo - fans out along one of China's great mountain roads. Most travellers spend two to four days here acclimatising, riding the Paoma cable car, boating Mugecuo and driving the golden loop to Xinduqiao and Tagong. This guide carries the ticket prices, bus fares, guesthouses and phones taken from the field guide, so you can plan it yourself or have our team arrange it end to end.
The alpine lake 17 km from town - RMB 220 with the shuttle, RMB 290 with the boat, and the 8-km Qianpu Falls valley in the peak season.

The 10-km photography lane of G318 - white pagodas, barley fields and the golden light that named the 'photographers' paradise'.
The temple-centred plateau 110 km away - golden meadows, yurts and the occasional horse festival.
