Travel Tipsfive things to remember

1 · Batteries die fast

Keep phones, cameras and spare batteries in inner pockets close to your body; the cold drains them within minutes.

2 · Layers beat one thick coat

The indoor-outdoor temperature gap can exceed 40°C — add and remove layers rather than overheating indoors.

3 · Boots need grip

Pavements and river ice are slippery — warm, non-slip soles are more important than looks.

4 · Book winter hotels early

Central rooms fill and prices jump during the festival and around Chinese New Year; reserve weeks ahead.

5 · Warm up slowly indoors

Let cold cameras and lenses warm inside a sealed bag to stop condensation before you use them again.

Background & Historythe geography and the story of the city

Geography & climate

Capital of Heilongjiang province in northeast China, Harbin sits on the south bank of the Songhua River, near the border with Russia. Winters are long, dry and bitterly cold — often below –20°C — while summers are short and cool. The surrounding region is forest, wetland and farmland, with ski hills and volcanic lakes within easy reach.

A brief history

A small riverside settlement until the Chinese Eastern Railway arrived in 1898, Harbin grew rapidly as Russians, Poles, Jews and other communities built a European-style city — earning the names "Oriental Moscow" and "Oriental Paris". It brewed China's first beer (1900) and built its first sugar refinery. After 1949 the foreign community left, but the domes, cobbled streets and Russian dishes remain, and the winter ice festival has made the city world-famous.
