Day-by-Day Plan

Day 1

Central Street, Sun Island & the Ice and Snow World. Bus to Central Street in the morning, browse the shops and walk across the frozen Songhua to Sun Island for the snow expo (about RMB 150). After dark, head to the Ice and Snow World and stay for the lit-up palaces. Warm up with a Harbin beer and northern food in the evening (see Harbin food guide).

Day 2

Saint Sophia, the Flood Control Tower, Qiulin & Gogol Street. Start at Saint Sophia Cathedral (RMB 20, 8:30–17:30), then walk to Central Street and the Flood Control Memorial Tower by the river. After lunch, visit the Qiulin department store and the churches along Gogol Street; catch an evening show if time allows.

Practical tips for this itinerary

Dress in thermal layers with a long down coat, thick hat, gloves and grip-soled boots; keep camera batteries in inner pockets. Book Central Street hotels weeks ahead during the festival (see Harbin hotels). Add a day at Yabuli or Snow Town if you have longer (see Harbin day tours).
