Walk Shen's House

The riverside mansion of Shen Wansan, the merchant said to be richer than the emperor — seven courtyards, a "running-horse corridor" and the story of a fortune lost to the Ming throne.

The town at dusk — boats under a hundred bridges, red lanterns on the water and the opera stage on the lake.

06

Eat the water-town table

Wansan trotters, lake fish and the sweet rice cakes of the old streets — the food of the merchants who made Zhouzhuang rich.

Questions & Answerswhat travellers always ask about Zhouzhuang

How much is the Zhouzhuang ticket?

The day ticket is ¥100 (07:00–16:00) and includes Shen's House, Zhang's House, the Twin Bridges and all the town sights. The night ticket (¥80, after 16:00) covers only the two great houses — day visits need the morning ticket.

Is Zhouzhuang worth the crowds?

Yes, with planning — it is the most famous water town for a reason. Arrive at opening, walk the far lanes, and see the houses before the tour buses; the town empties again after 17:00.

How do I reach Zhouzhuang?

Kunshan South station (high-speed) is about 40 minutes from Shanghai; from there a tourist bus reaches the town in 40 minutes. Direct coaches also run from Shanghai and Suzhou.

Where should I stay?

In-town guesthouses give the lantern-lit nights and quiet dawns — from about ¥200 off-season, ¥350–600 at weekends. Outside the south gate, hotels are easier for luggage.

What should I eat?

The Wansan trotter (braised pork knuckle), lake fish, "Oucai" water chestnuts and the sweet rice cakes of the old bakeries — the merchants' table of old Jiangnan.

When is the best time?

Spring mist and autumn evenings are the classics; the lotus of South Lake blooms in summer. Golden weeks are very crowded — book early and start at 08:00.

Travel Tipsthings to remember

1 · Day ticket before 16:00

The ¥100 day ticket is the only one covering all the houses — arrive before noon and keep it for the sights; after 16:00 only the ¥80 night ticket is sold.

2 · Boat at dusk

The rowboats are loveliest and least queued at lantern time — reserve through your guesthouse for the sunset circuit.

3 · Keep off the main lane at noon

The central street is shoulder-to-shoulder by midday — walk the parallel lanes and the riverside walks instead.

4 · Flat shoes, always

Bridges, steps and cobbles dominate — the lanes are beautiful and slippery in rain.

5 · Overnight changes everything

The town after 18:00 and before 08:00 is a different place — quiet, lantern-lit and almost empty; the overnight stay is worth it.

Background & Historythe town a painting made famous

Geography & climate

Zhouzhuang lies in the lake plain of Kunshan, east of Suzhou — a town built entirely around canals, with more than half of its old houses still on the water. Subtropical, misty in spring, golden in autumn.

History & culture

Settled in the Song and rich by the Ming, Zhouzhuang grew on silk and trade. Its houses, bridges and lake survived the centuries almost unchanged — "China's first water town".

The painting that opened the town

In 1984 the artist Chen Yifei painted the Double Bridges — "Memory of Hometown" — and the image travelled the world, drawing travellers to a town that had been quietly sleeping by the water for six hundred years.
