Yunnan Travel Guide — the province of the old towns, the snow mountains, the lakes and the Dai river lands - 72 classic sights and four golden routes

Yunnan - 'the south of the clouds' - is the most diverse province of China: the Tibetan highlands of Shangri-La, the Naxi old towns of Lijiang, the Bai capital of Dali, the Spring City of Kunming and the tropical rain forest of Xishuangbanna all lie within its borders. The field guide counts 72 classic sights and four golden routes, and budgets RMB 5,000-6,000 (excluding the return flights) for an 8-day tour. This overview carries the routes, the budgets, the seasonal notes and the links to the full city guides, so you can plan the province yourself or have our team arrange it end to end.

Questions & Answerswhat travellers always ask about Yunnan

How many days do I need for Yunnan?

The field guide budgets RMB 5,000-6,000 (excluding the return flights) for 8 days. The golden route is 9 days - Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La and Deqin; the west line is 6 days and the all-province tour with Xishuangbanna is 12 days.

What is the golden route?

Day 1 Kunming and the Stone Forest, Day 2 Dali, Day 3 Lijiang, Day 4 Lashi Lake and Shuhe, Day 5 Tiger Leaping Gorge to Lugu Lake, Day 6 Daluoshui to Lijiang, Day 7 Shangri-La - Songzanlin and Dukezong, Day 8 Deqin, Feilai Temple and Yubeng, Day 9 Deqin and the Cizhong church.

When is the best season?

Autumn (September-November) is the classic - dry and golden; the winter is sunny but cold in the highlands; the summer rain runs July-August; and the Golden Week holidays fill every hotel - avoid them.

What is the daily budget?

About RMB 100 a day on the frugal budget - the hostels, the street food and the local buses; the full 8-day tour with the hired cars and the entry tickets runs to RMB 5,000-6,000 excluding the flights.

Is the altitude a problem?

Kunming at 1,900 m and Lijiang at 2,400 m are easy; Shangri-La at 3,200 m and the Meili road are the real test - build the days slowly and the acclimatisation follows the route.

Can I combine the west line?

Yes - the 6-day west line runs Kunming-Dali-Tengchong (the volcano park, the Beihai wetland, the hot springs, the Heshun old town and the Gaoligong mountains)-Ruili; the all-province 12-day tour adds Xishuangbanna from Day 10.

Can ToursChinaTravel arrange my Yunnan trip?

Yes - email [email protected] or message us on WhatsApp. Our team books the flights, the hotels, the Tiger Leaping Gorge logistics, the cableways, the Lugu Lake boats and the whole route end to end, free of charge.

Travel Tipsthings to remember

Avoid the Golden Week

The May Day and National Day weeks fill the old towns and the trains - the field guide is firm: avoid them.

Climb the altitude slowly

The route from Kunming (1,900 m) through Lijiang (2,400 m) to Shangri-La (3,200 m) is the natural acclimatisation - keep the pace.

The winter sun is warm, the nights cold

The highlands are sunny by day and freezing at night in winter - the layers and the down jacket.

The summer rain is July-August

The rainy season comes to the mountains and the south - carry the umbrella and the quick-dry clothes.

Book the festival rooms

The Water-Splashing Festival, the March Street and the horse races fill the towns - book the hotels ahead.

Carry cash for the villages

The lakes and the villages of Lugu and Napa take cash - the ATMs are in the towns.
