The 'Little Guilin of the North' and the 'Great View of the Capital': 90 km of hikeable gorge in Baili Gorge, bamboo-raft water on the Juma River, a five-storey limestone cave, an alpine meadow with June glaciers — and roast whole lamb by the fire.
Four moments every visitor should not miss — the essence of Yesanpo in a single day.
Ninety kilometres of river-cut valley, but you only need the 16 km small loop: cliffs, waterfalls, the Tiger's Mouth, the 'Sky Line' slot and the 2,800-step ecological stairway — four hours of North China's best gorge walking.
Bamboo rafts on the calm upper reaches, white-water rafts on the chutes below — July and August water runs a warm 20–22°C. The Langya section's 3.5 km is billed as the river's 'first raft'.
A five-storey limestone cave at a constant 11–13°C, with four spring groups and — at the Grain Rain festival — the mysterious 'multi-scaled fish' that appears in the cave spring, a 'wonder spring of the world'.
Pick a 5–8 month lamb (25–40 jin), watch it turned over double-layer fire for two hours, and eat it with river greens, wild mountain vegetables and cold beer — the valley's great communal ritual.
The signature experiences of the 'Little Guilin of the North'.
The hiking star: three valleys (Sea of Crabapple 17.5 km, Ten-Hanging Valley 22.5 km, Scorpion Ravine 12.5 km) meeting in a 52.5 km antler shape — cliffs, waterfalls, the Tiger's Mouth and the 2,800-step ecological stairway.
Seventy-plus kilometres of the Juma flow through Yesanpo before reaching the Hai River: bamboo rafts, white-water rafts, speedboats and wild fishing on water that stays a warm 20–22°C in high summer.
1,800 m of cave threading five storeys of chambers, at a constant 11–13°C — a natural air-conditioned palace with four spring groups and the fabled Grain-Rain fish.
A national forest park at 1,983 m with the highest negative-ion count in the region — 551,923 ions/cm³, 126 times Beijing's streets. In June, a 100 m glacier lingers beside summer flowers: 'one mountain, four seasons'.
Nine waterfalls, eighteen pools and a virgin forest in the upper gorge — plus more than 30 Ming-and-Qing cliff carvings, the largest collection in North China: 'the great cultural corridor of history'.
Yesanpo's great table ritual: a young lamb picked live, roasted over double-tier fire for about two hours, and eaten with river greens, wild mountain vegetables and the valley's own wine.
April to October is the classic season — wildflowers and rafting from May, cool gorge hiking all summer, and autumn colour in October. June at Baicaopan can even surprise you with glacier ice beside summer flowers at 1,983 m. More Yesanpo Q&A →
Baili Gorge (the hiking star, 90 km of valley), Yugu Cave (a five-storey limestone cave, a constant 11–13°C), Longmen Pass (cliff carvings and waterfalls) and Baicaopan (an alpine meadow at 1,983 m). The Ethnic Park by the river hosts folk shows; shuttles link the areas in season.
Yes — the Juma River is the classic: bamboo rafts, white-water rafts and speedboats on water that runs 20–22°C in July–August. The Langya River section is billed as the 'first raft of the Juma's eighteen ferries' — 3.5 km of chutes and rapids at about ¥80 at the gate, often ¥30–50 through group deals.
About 128 km. By rail: train 6437 from Beijing West (17:45) reaches Yesanpo at 20:29 (¥6.5) or Baili Gorge at 20:44 (¥7.5); the Y595/Y596 tourist special runs April–October. By coach: Beijing's Tiangiao station bus 917 runs at 07:30 and 08:30 (¥38). By car: about 2–3 hours on the Jinggang and Zhangfang–Shidu route.
Roast whole lamb — a 5–8 month lamb (25–40 jin) picked live, roasted over double-tier fire for about two hours; river vegetables and wild mountain greens (river greens, water celery, Magnolia sprouts, mountain mushrooms); fried wild scorpions (safe once deep-fried); and rainbow trout, best grilled, with the head made into soup. Book the lamb a day ahead.

The Juma is the valley's playground: bamboo rafts, white-water rafts, speedboats and fishing. The Langya section's 3.5 km of chutes is billed as the 'first raft of eighteen ferries' — about ¥80 at the gate, often ¥30–50 through group deals.
The great outdoor show: a 3,600-seat theatre, 300 performers, music and spectacle on the mountain stage — the valley's big night out at 20:30.
Seven horse grounds ring the valley; the Jiulongshan track is the classic 7.5 km loop — ¥10 entry, about ¥40 a lap. Choose a calm mount; the track climbs toward the ridge.
A 68 m cliff-style jump over the Juma opposite Lingzhi Cave — among the highest in China, at ¥180. Not for the faint of heart; the rebound over water is spectacular.
The classic group evening: fire, songs, roast lamb and the night show. Fire needs a group and a booked program — arrange through your guesthouse.
Go-karts (about ¥30 a lap), the Silver Lake bumper boats (¥40/hour/person), laser-tag grounds (¥30–120 per session) and the donkey carts of the old lanes — the valley's lower-key fun.
Most of the valley sleeps in farm courtyards — the local guesthouses with home cooking, lamb fires and railway pick-ups. Peak-season weekends need booking; our team books any of these free of charge. Book via email or WhatsApp.

Yesanpo's table is the mountain kitchen: roast whole lamb, wild river greens, deep-fried scorpions and rainbow trout from the cold streams. Prices are reference rates — book the lamb a day ahead.
The valley's ritual: a 5–8 month lamb (25–40 jin) picked live, roasted over double-tier fire for about two hours, served with river greens and mustard-wood fungus. Book the lamb a day ahead with your guesthouse.
River greens, water celery, Magnolia sprouts and mountain mushrooms — the wild vegetables of the gorge, stir-fried simply. The 'sweetheart dish' (a herb nicknamed for lovers) is the local romance.
The dare dish: wild scorpions deep-fried until the toxin is destroyed — safe, crunchy and a great story. Pair with beer and watch your friends squirm.
The cold-stream special: boneless, best grilled whole, with the head and bones simmered into soup. A must-order at any riverside table.
Soft-shell walnuts, almond flats and summer prickly-ash — the local gifts, sold by the guesthouses and the village shops. Take a bag home for the kitchen.
Train 6437 from Beijing West (17:45) rolls into Yesanpo at 20:29 (¥6.5) and Baili Gorge at 20:44 (¥7.5); the return 6438 leaves in the morning. The Y595/Y596 tourist special runs April–October.
Tiangiao station's 917 special runs to the valley at 07:30 and 08:30 (¥38), returning at 16:30 and 17:30 — the day-tripper's bus.
About 128 km from Beijing — the classic runs Liuliqiao → Jinggang Expressway → Liulihe → Hancunhe → Zhangfang → Shidu → Yesanpo. Nine route options exist; the Shidu road is the prettiest but busiest at weekends.
Shuttle buses link the four main areas in season; private taxis run Baili Gorge–Yugu Cave for ¥70–80, and donkey carts cover the last 2 km inside the gorge for ¥10.
For long-haul travellers Yesanpo is reached through Beijing's airports — then the train or coach above. The nearest smaller airport is Baoding, mostly feeder flights.
The gorge floor and boardwalks are the best transport: the Baili Gorge small loop (16.3 km), the Longmen boardwalk past the carvings, and the Baicaopan meadow loops cover most of the valley's best ground on foot.
Soft-shell walnuts, almond flats and summer prickly-ash — the classic gifts, sold by the guesthouses and village shops. In season add wild river greens (dried) and mountain mushrooms for the kitchen.
The village shops along the main road and at the gorge entrance carry the full range. Buy walnuts by weight with the shell intact; prickly-ash keeps its punch sealed in glass.
Sanpo Town Health Centre — +86 312 4568 635. Baijian Post Office — +86 312 4578 503. The valley has no big hospital — for anything serious, Baoding city is the nearest major centre.

The classic Beijing escape road runs through the gorge villages of Shidu on the way to and from the city — rafting at the Ten Ferries, glass bridges and river-front lunches make it a stop, not just a road.

Langya guidePeak-season weekends are the valley's crunch: rooms, lamb tables and raft slots all need booking. Your guesthouse will usually meet the train or bus — arrange the pickup when you book.
At the rail stops, touts swarm arriving trains with 'special deals'. Use licensed taxis and the area shuttle; the 'cheap package' almost always inflates elsewhere.
Donkey carts, horses, go-karts and raft operators all quote on the spot — agree the price and duration before boarding, and confirm it's per person, not per hour of surprises.
Baicaopan sits 10°C cooler than the valley; Yugu Cave holds a constant 11–13°C. A light jacket, water and sun protection cover both, whatever the valley forecast says.
Eat deep-fried wild scorpions only from licensed tables (the heat destroys the toxin), and for the roast lamb agree the weight and price before the fire is lit.
Yesanpo sits where the Taihang and Yan mountains meet, 100 km from Beijing, with the Juma River cutting the gorge line. Its temperate continental climate — about 12°C annual average, 165 frost-free days, 2,800 hours of sunshine and 600 mm of rain — makes it the capital's natural summer retreat.
The name comes from the old three-tier villages of the upper, middle and lower slopes, whose altitude differences give a half-month spring delay between them — the 'Panyu snow' was one of the ancient Zhuozhou eight sights. As the 'throat of the frontier', the valley carried Ming garrisons, whose officers left the cliff carvings of Longmen Pass. In the anti-Japanese war it was the heart of the Pingxi base area; the Five Heroes of Langya Mountain made the neighbouring peak a national shrine. Since 1929 it has been its own administrative district, and the 1980s discovery of the gorge made it the valley of today.
A 5A scenic area on the geologically famous Zijingguan deep-fault belt, Yesanpo pairs a serious gorge-and-cave landscape with a village culture of lamb fires, folk shows and mountain produce — the 'Great View of the Capital' of the Beijing weekend.
