Shuhe is the quiet sister of Dayan - the ancient market town on the tea-horse road about 4 km north of Lijiang's old town, at about 2,440 m, where the Eight Views of Shuhe (the night market of Sifang Square, the Ming-dynasty Qingshi Bridge, the moon over Longmen, the snow peak in the Nine-Ding Dragon Pool and the stone-lotus night reading of Shiliansi) still set the pace. The field guide budgets RMB 1,000-1,500 for a 1-3 day visit, and the season runs May-October. This guide carries the walks, rides, hotels, restaurants, transport fares and the practical numbers from the guide, so you can plan it yourself or have our team arrange it end to end.

The old town lanes, Sifang Square, Qingshi Bridge and the Nine-Ding Dragon Pool are free. The maintenance-fee card of Dayan is not checked here, but some paid sites like Yufeng Temple and Yushui Village on the Baisha road charge separately.
May-October is the busy season - the May Day and National Day weeks and the summer holiday are crowded; the Snow Mountain Music Festival is in August and the July horse fair in the seventh lunar month.
No - the old town is pedestrian-only. Cars stop at the gates; the lanes are cobbled and narrow.
Sifang Square and the Qingshi Bridge, the Nine-Ding Dragon Pool, the Shiliansi climb, the teahouses and the batik shops, then the evening music - or cycle the north road to Baisha.

The 16-km mountain road through Baisha to the Rock residence and the Jade Lake.
Dayan, the Black Dragon Pool and the night lanes of the bigger old town.
The horse ride and the boat of the wetland lake west of Lijiang.
No cars inside Shuhe - park at the gates and carry your bags over the cobbles.
The May Day, National Day and summer weeks are crowded - book beds and the Banyan Tree ahead.
The RMB 10-15 rentals go fast in season - the north road needs a morning start for the full Baisha-Yuhu ride.
Shuhe sleeps early - the bars are 'quiet bars'; the night market of Sifang Square is the liveliest spot.
The spring water of the Nine-Ding Pool feeds every lane - do not wash in the canals.
The Naxi elders and the weavers prefer to be asked first - a smile and a nod usually does it.
The post office on Yanliu Road for the parcels and the stamps.
The official complaints line: +86 888 512 3432.
The Shuhe district office: +86 888 517 4636.
The trekking and cycling organiser on the old Sifang Street.
The airport information desk for the flights and the airport buses: +86 888 516 1289.
The old travellers counted eight scenes of Shuhe - the night fireflies of the market, the willow mist of the Qingshi Bridge, the moon over Longmen, the snow peak in the pool, the fish that come to the hand, the sounding broken stele, the red leaves of the western hill and the stone-lotus night reading.
Shuhe was the market town where the caravans of Yunnan tea and Sichuan salt changed horses - the old Sifang Square was its trading floor.
The widest stone arch bridge of the region was built in the Wanli era of the Ming dynasty - the old road from Lijiang crossed the town on its back.
Like Dayan, Shuhe is a Naxi town of cobbled lanes, canals and courtyard houses - quieter, smaller and slower than its famous sister.
