The first capital of the Qing Dynasty, a city of palace courtyards, marshals' mansions and hearty northeast warmth. This guide covers the must-see sights, honest itineraries, where to eat and how to book your whole trip — all in one place.
Four experiences every first-time visitor should not miss — the essence of Shenyang in a single day's walk.
Before Beijing, there was Shengjing. The Chongzheng Hall, Dazheng Hall and Ten Kings Pavilion survive from the 1620s — the very rooms where the Qing Empire began.
"One Zhang Mansion, half a Republic." The Marshal's office, the Blue House and Zhao Yidi's residence trace the warlord era through the Zhang family's own walls.
The Liu Laogen Grand Stage serves the real thing — acrobatic, gloriously rude folk comedy that defines northeast China's sense of humour.
Founded in the Qing era, Shenyang's most famous dumpling house stir-fries the filling before simmering it in broth — the original northeast dumpling.
Shenyang's signature experiences — the reasons travellers fall for this old northern capital.
China's most complete palace complex outside Beijing and a UNESCO World Heritage site — golden roofs, vermilion walls and the octagonal Dazheng Hall of the early Qing court.
Zhang Zuolin's mansion and son Zhang Xueliang's residence — "one mansion, half a Republic." The European-style Blue House and the family's private rooms are pure 1920s drama.
Beiling Park surrounds the Zhaoling Mausoleum of Qing emperor Huang Taiji — one of the three imperial tombs in the Northeast UNESCO listing, most haunting in fresh snow.
Zhongjie's Liu Laogen Grand Stage fills every night with skits, acrobatics and double-act comedy — the sound of northeast China laughing at itself.
A stone calendar frozen at 22:20 on 18 September 1931 marks where the war began. Free admission, and a sobering half-day for anyone who wants to understand modern China.
China's oldest surviving commercial street — 200 shops along a kilometre, from Qing-era arcades to Daxiyue City malls, packed until late.
April–May and September–October bring the most comfortable weather. Winter (December–February) is the snow season — the palace, Beiling Park and Qipan Mountain look magical under snow, but temperatures can drop to around –20°C. More Shenyang Q&A →
Two days covers the essentials — the Imperial Palace, Zhang's Mansion and Zhongjie on day one; Beiling Park and the Liaoning Museum on day two. Three to five days add the Expo Garden, Qipan Mountain, the 918 History Museum and Fantawild Adventure.
Yes — it is a completely different site. Shenyang Palace was the seat of the Qing court from 1625 until the capital moved to Beijing in 1644, and it is China's most complete palace complex outside Beijing. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it can be toured in about two hours.
If you want a real night out in northeast China, yes. The Liu Laogen Grand Stage on Zhongjie hosts nightly shows — bawdy, acrobatic folk comedy. Tickets are not cheap, so book ahead through your hotel or our team.
A three-to-five-day trip typically costs RMB 1,200–2,000 (about US$170–280) per person, excluding flights and hotels. Palace tickets are around RMB 60, most museums are free, and northeast food is very reasonably priced.

One of China's four great temple fairs, held at the Shisheng Temple near the old north market during Spring Festival, May Day and National Day. Acrobats, folk crafts (sugar painting, egg carving) and snacks from all over China fill the square.
Every May, a week of Korea-themed events — K-pop performances, cultural shows and a China–Korea travel and trade fair. Shenyang's large Korean community makes this the real thing.
Every September (about 10 days), the city dresses up in its Manchu past: imperial procession re-enactments, court dances, the emperor's "inspection tour" and the Shengjing Culture Fair around the palace.
December to February, Shenyang turns to ice and snow: skiing at Qipan Mountain, ice-skating races, winter swimming, snow-sculpture parks at Beiling, Nanhu and Wulihe — plus torchlight parades and neighbourhood yangge troupes.
As Liaoning's capital, Shenyang offers everything from ¥45 hostel beds to the 435-room Sunrise Emperor Wanxin five-star. Stay near Zhongjie or the metro lines for the easiest sightseeing. Our team books any of these for you free of charge.

Shenyang's table is northeast China's: Lao Bian dumplings, Li Liangui smoked-meat pancakes (created 1842), white pork with blood sausage from the Manchu tradition, Korean cold noodles at West Tower, and hearty dishes big enough to feed an army. Portions are generous and flavours are bold.
Shenyang's most famous eatery since the Qing era: the filling is stir-fried first, then slowly simmered in chicken or bone broth until the juices soak in. Thin-skinned, plump and famous nationwide.
A 1842 creation: pork smoked with a secret herbal recipe from an old Chinese doctor, folded into crisp layered pancakes. Rich but not greasy — the pancake's the point.
A classic Manchu dish of Liaoning and Jilin: slices of white pork and blood sausage, tender, savoury and vivid red-and-white on the plate. The Najiaguan restaurant is the local benchmark.
Korean-style chilled buckwheat noodles in icy broth, born of Shenyang's Korean community around West Tower (Xita) — the perfect antidote to a hot day or a heavy meal.
A bustling local favourite serving honest home-style cooking and excellent dumplings — the kind of place where a full table costs very little.
An old northeast farmhouse turned restaurant — donkey grinders, kang beds and 1960s furniture, serving wok-fried classics. Try the tofu with fresh water, guobaorou (sweet-sour pork) and pork rib stew with pickled cabbage.
Taoxian International Airport (沈阳桃仙国际机场), 22 km from the city centre, is northeast China's busiest airport — domestic flights nationwide plus routes to Japan, Korea, Germany and France.
Shenyang is one of China's five national railway hubs, served by two main stations and the HSR network to Beijing, Harbin and Dalian.
A ring-and-spoke expressway network (Shen-Da, Jing-Shen, Shen-Ha, Shen-Fu, Shen-Ben) links Shenyang with Beijing, Dalian, Changchun, Harbin and most of the region.
Two metro lines (1 east–west, 2 north–south) plus 140+ bus routes cover every district — cheap and simple once you know the stops.
Taxis start at ¥8 by day and ¥9 at night, with a ¥1 fuel surcharge — cheap for getting across a big city.
For Qipan Mountain, the Expo Garden, the Mystery Slope and the lavender estate, a car (or a charter) saves hours of bus juggling.
Rare ginseng, deer antler and black fungus; local food brands like Huishan milk, Zhongjie big pear popsicles and Snow Beer; old names such as Lao Long Kou liquor, Bulao Lin sugar and Tao Li bread; plus Hongmei MSG, Shenyang Hong Yao medicine, and handicrafts — Shenyang feather paintings and coloured-stone inlay art.
Zhongjie: the historic pedestrian street — Joy City, New Mart and Henglong Plaza. Taiyuan Street: the busiest shopping quarter, with the trendy underground mall for budget fashion. Qingnian Street: luxury malls (Zhuozhan, Henglong, MixC) along metro line 2. Wumai Market: northeast China's biggest wholesale clothing market — go early (opens 5–6 am, winds down by 3–4 pm) and mind your pockets.
Major hospitals cluster in Heping and Shenhe districts — the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University (Shenyang) is the city's leading general hospital. Pharmacies are common along every main street. For emergencies dial 120; for police 110 — no area code needed.
Shenyang tourism hotline / citizens' service: +86 24 12345 (municipal service line, some English support). Shenyang Taoxian Airport service: +86 24 96833. Shenyang North Station enquiry: +86 24 6204 1168. Banks and ATMs are everywhere; most museums are free and close Mondays.
"Shenyang's Provence": rolling rows of lavender with sunflowers on the hills of Magang township, southwest of the Forest Park. Best late June – September, when the whole valley smells of lavender.
More Shenyang day tripsOne east-side loop: the Expo Garden's flower shows, then Qipan Mountain's streams, maple in autumn, skiing in winter, and the Mystery Slope (guaipo) where cars roll uphill. Fuling (East Tomb) 108 steps is on the way.
More Shenyang day tripsDecember–February can hit –20°C. Down jacket, gloves, warm boots and a hat are non-negotiable — the palace courtyards are beautiful, but they are also wind tunnels.
Errenzhuan tickets at the Liu Laogen Grand Stage sell out on weekends. Book through your hotel or our team a day or two before.
Students get discounts at paid sights — the Expo Garden, Fantawild and the palaces all check IDs at the gate.
The wholesale market is famously busy and famously pickpocket-prone. Go early (it winds down by mid-afternoon) and keep valuables zipped inside.
Most Shenyang buses stop by 18:00–19:00. After dinner, use the metro or a taxi — or you will be walking home.
Shenyang is the capital of Liaoning Province and the largest city in northeast China — a sub-provincial city of about 8.2 million registered residents across 13,000 km². It lies on the plain south of the Liaodong hills, with a temperate semi-humid continental climate: four clear seasons, an average 8.3°C, about 500 mm of rain a year, and winters that mean business.
Named for its position north of the Shen River, Shenyang rose with the Manchu: in 1625 Nurhaci moved his capital here and built the palace that became the first seat of the Qing Dynasty — renamed Shengjing, it stayed the Manchu capital until 1644. Under the Republic it was the power base of warlord Zhang Zuolin and his son Zhang Xueliang, and in the industrial era it became the "eldest son of the Republic", the cradle of New China's heavy industry.
The Han majority shares Shenyang with sizeable Manchu, Korean, Hui, Xibe and Mongolian communities — the Manchu arrived with the 1625 court, and the Korean quarter at West Tower has shaped the city's food. Folk culture stays loud and proud: yangge dance, errenzhuan comedy and temple fairs all still draw crowds.
