The eastern anchor of the Great Wall: the First Pass Under Heaven, the Old Dragon Head where the Wall wades into the Bohai Sea, Beidaihe's sunrise beaches, Emerald Isle's desert dunes, and the region's famous self-serve seafood.
Four moments every visitor should not miss — the essence of Qinhuangdao in a single day.
Climb the two-storey gate tower of the First Pass Under Heaven, stand on the crenellations, and look west along the Great Wall ridges and east to the sea — the view that earned the name.
At the Old Dragon Head the Great Wall literally wades into the Bohai Sea — the only place on earth where the Wall meets the ocean, with the 澄海楼 pavilion watching from the cliff.
Emerald Isle: dunes of sand running straight into blue water — 'half desert, half sea'. Slide the slopes, camp for the sunrise, and watch black-headed gulls work the shoreline.
Qinhuangdao's seafood culture is DIY: buy live mantis shrimp, crab or scallops by the jin at the market, have the kitchen steam them for a few yuan, and eat metres from the boats.
The signature experiences of the Great Wall coast.
The eastern gate of the Great Wall, built in 1381: a two-storey tower whose plaque gave the pass its name, guarding the corridor between mountain and sea for six centuries.
The Old Dragon Head: a stone wall marching off the cliff and into the waves, the easternmost point of the Ming Wall, built by Qi Jiguang's engineers in 1579.
Emerald Isle at Changli is the 'kiss of desert and sea' — dunes up to 44 m sliding into the Bohai, one of China's most beautiful coasts and a haven for the rare black-headed gull.
The resort classic: from Eagle Rock the sun 'bathes' in the sea while the wetland below wakes a thousand birds. Mao Zedong wrote his famous Beidaihe poem from this very view.
Twenty minutes from town, the Wall abandons the plain and scales the mountain: steep stone stairs, crenellated towers and, from the summit, both the sea and the 'hanging' Great Wall of the northern ridges.
Mantis shrimp, swimming crab, scallops, razor clams and the famous self-serve seafood night — bought live at the market, cooked your way, and priced by the jin the local way.
May to October suits the coast best: Beidaihe beaches from June to August, bird migration in spring and autumn, and the coolest summer escape in North China — the July average is about 23.6°C, a couple of degrees below Beijing and Tianjin. More Qinhuangdao Q&A →
Beidaihe is the classic scenic resort — parks, cliffs and the famous sunrise; Nandaihe is the newer entertainment beach — water parks, sand sports and nightlife. They sit about 20 minutes apart by bus 22 (¥1), so many travellers do both.
Buy live by the jin at the market, watch the weighing (a 1-jin bottle of water is the classic scale test), pick your own animals, and watch the kitchen cook them — swapping live for dead and fake scales are the standard tricks.
July and August are the safe, warm months; June and September are passable for hardy swimmers; May and October are for beach walks, not swimming. Always stay inside the marked swimming lanes.

July–August is the safe season; June and September are for the hardy. Always swim inside the marked lanes — the Bohai currents are real.
Sea air and sand are brutal on lenses. Dry bag for the beach, lens cloth for the salt spray, and never put the camera down on sand — the classic local repair trade.
Beidaihe for beach, Shanhaiguan for the Wall, Changli for dunes, Haigang for transport — and book the station nearest your hotel. In July–August, prepay rooms well ahead.
Sunrise at Geziwo, early-morning Tiger Rock, late-afternoon sands — the coast is transformed outside the 10:00–16:00 peak. September–October gives empty beaches and warm sea.
Qinhuangdao hugs the Bohai coast where the Yan Mountains meet the sea — the only major Chinese city that has never changed its name in 340 years. Its temperate, semi-humid climate (about 10.1°C annual average) makes it the classic summer retreat: cooler than Beijing, warmer than the northern interior.
In 215 BC the First Emperor Qin Shi Huang toured east to Jieshi, leaving his name on the coast; the Han emperor Wu Di later climbed a terrace here, and Cao Cao wrote his poem "Guan Canghai — Viewing the Sea" from the same headland. In 1381 General Xu Da built the First Pass at Shanhaiguan, and in 1579 Qi Jiguang pushed the Wall into the sea at the Old Dragon Head. In 1644 Wu Sangui opened the pass to the Qing armies — the hinge of the Ming–Qing transition.
From 1898 the Qing court opened Beidaihe as China's first seaside resort; a century of villas, railways and summer government followed, and in 1954 Mao Zedong swam here and wrote his famous poem. Today the city pairs six centuries of Wall with a serious seaside resort culture.
