Qinghai Lake is the largest inland lake in China - 4,400 square kilometres of turquoise water sitting at 3,200 m on the Tibetan plateau. In July the southern and eastern shores turn yellow with rapeseed flowers; the yurt camps of the Erlangjian shore serve mutton and tsampa under the brightest stars in China; and the west shore holds the famous bird island of migrating cranes and gulls. The classic loop - two to three days, by hired car or bicycle - takes in the Erlangjian pier, the Heima River sunrise, the bird island and the flowered shores, with Chaka Salt Lake a natural next day.
The classic dawn of the lake - the sun rising out of the water at the Heima River shore, the yurts still steaming.
The pier and the lake boats of the Erlangjian shore - the turquoise water from the middle.
The two rocky islets of the west shore - gulls, cranes and the migrating flocks of May.
The yellow terraces against the blue - the photograph that made the lake famous.
Mutton, tsampa and the cold bright stars - the yurt camps of the shore.
One of China's classic bicycle circuits - three days of plateau light and headwind.
The blue of the inland sea - the colour that gives the province its name.
The yellow terraces of July against the turquoise - the postcard view.
The dawn over the water from the west shore - the classic morning.
The shore camps of mutton and tsampa - the plateau night under the stars.
Two days cover the classic loop from Xining - day one to the Erlangjian shore and a yurt night, day two the sunrise and the return. A third day adds Chaka Salt Lake on the way back, or the bird island and the full west-shore circuit.
The Erlangjian shore ticket is RMB 100 and the boat rides RMB 50-100; the bird island is included in the wider scenic area. A yurt night with dinner runs about RMB 100-200, and a hired car with driver about RMB 700 a day from Xining.
June to September - the lake is blue, the shores green and the rape flowers peak in the first three weeks of July. Winter freezes the lake and closes the yurts.
The lake sits at 3,200 m - most visitors manage with a slow pace, plenty of water and a night's acclimatisation in Xining (2,260 m) first. The wind and the sun are the bigger surprises.

Qinghai Lake is the largest inland lake in China, a relic of an ancient sea - its Tibetan name, Tso Ngonpo, the blue lake, gives the province its name.
The two islets of the west shore were declared a reserve in 1959 - the nesting ground of the plateau's great migrations.
For the Tibetan herders of the shore the lake is a holy place - the kora (circuit) of the pilgrims still circles the water.
