Nyingchi - the Tibetan for 'throne of the sun' - is the 'Jiangnan of Tibet', the lowest and greenest corner of the plateau at an average 3,100 m. The Yarlung Tsangpo cuts the deepest canyon on Earth around Mount Namcha Barwa (7,782 m), the 'shy maiden peak' that hides behind clouds; Lulang spreads its alpine meadows and stone-stove chicken along the Sichuan-Tibet road; Basum Lake floats its temple island in green water; and in April the wild peach blossoms of the valleys turn the whole region pink under the snow line. Most travellers reach it from Lhasa by the 407-km road (6-8 hours) or the direct Chengdu flight, and give it three to four days. This guide carries the ticket prices, buses, guesthouses, restaurants and phones from the field guide, so you can plan it yourself or have our team arrange it end to end.
The deepest canyon on Earth, cut by the Yarlung Tsangpo below the 7,782-m Namcha Barwa - the river turns around the peak in the great bend.
The 'shy maiden' of the Himalaya - the triangular snow peak that shows itself for minutes at a time; the villages of Pai and Zhaxigang are the best seats.
The alpine meadows, spruce walls and Tibetan villages of the 'Little Switzerland of Tibet' - 80 km east of Bayi town.
The emerald lake at 3,700 m - the island temple, the driftwood prayer flags and the cedar slopes of the Gongbo Nyida valley.
April in the Galala village and the Nyang river terraces - the wild peach forest in full pink under the snow line.
The Lulang specialty - free-range chicken and matsutake simmered in a hand-carved Motuo stone pot.
The shy maiden peak above the canyon villages.
The Yarlung Tsangpo gorge and the snow ridge from the Pai road.
The forest-sea, the fences and the horses of Little Switzerland.
Wild peach blossom under the snow line in April.
Three days covers Basum Lake and the Nyang River, the Grand Canyon and Namcha Barwa, and Lulang; four adds the Namgyi valley and the giant cypresses; the peach festival deserves the full April week. The field guide budgets about RMB 800 for a basic 4-day trip excluding the flight.
Air China flies Chengdu to Nyingchi Mainling Airport daily at 07:30, landing 09:15 (1 h 45 m), with extra flights in the holidays; the airport bus is RMB 25 to Bayi town (tickets +86 894 581 0118). By road, the Lhasa-Bayi coaches (407 km, 6-8 hours, RMB 100-170) leave at 08:00; Bayi-Lhasa is RMB 80-100; Bayi-Bomi RMB 100 and Bayi-Pai RMB 50.
Late March to mid April - the wild peach trees of the Galala village, the Nyang river terraces and the Zayu valley flower in sequence from south to north; the Peach Blossom Festival runs through April and the snow peaks stay white above the pink.
The Lhasa-Bayi road is a good sealed highway in all seasons; the Bayi-Bomi section still crosses the old Tongmai 'sky road' of the G318 - check the weather and the road reports May-August, when rain can close the section.
The region around Motuo and Mainling needs a border permit (banfang zheng) for foreign and domestic travellers alike - arrange it in your home county or in Lhasa with your passport; our team can handle the paperwork.
Yes - email [email protected] or message us on WhatsApp. Our team books the canyon and Basum tickets, the Lulang stone-pot tables, hotels and the Bayi-Pai jeep, free of charge and without obligation.
