Lanzhou is the only provincial capital on the Yellow River - a long, narrow city of mountains and river that has been a Silk Road stronghold for two thousand years. The essentials sit on one riverfront line: Baitashan Park for the panorama, the 1907 Zhongshan Iron Bridge, the Yellow River Mother sculpture and the Waterwheel Expo Garden, with the Five Springs Mountain and the great Gansu Museum a short ride away. The city is also the gateway to Xiahe and the Gannan grasslands, Liujiaxia and the Bingling Temple grottoes, and the rail hub for Dunhuang and the whole Hexi Corridor. The food is the other reason to come - a bowl of beef noodles (the eight noodle shapes of the manual), the Zhengning Road night market, lamb, huidouzi and milk-egg jiuzao. This guide carries the tickets, the opening hours, the restaurants and the phones from the field guide, with free booking help from our team for the hotels, the river rides and the onward trips.
