Jiuzhaigou is a chain of alpine lakes in the Min Mountains of northern Sichuan — turquoise water, Tibetan villages and a valley of waterfalls that China calls the fairyland. The Rize branch holds the rainbow Five Flower Lake and the great falls; the Zezhawa branch climbs to the Long Lake and the Five-Color Pond; the Shuzheng lakes terrace down the main valley to the Tibetan village. Autumn is the famous month; the park works its blue magic in every season.
The rainbow lake of the Rize Valley — submerged trunks, clear turquoise and the gold of autumn overhead.
The 300-metre-wide curtain at the valley crotch — the widest high-altitude waterfall in China.
The highest lake of the valley at 3,060 m — a great blue sheet below the snowy ridge.
The tiny pond that never freezes — peacock-blue water against the bare rock, the park's most photographed puddle.
The stillest water in the valley — arrive before the breeze for the perfect inverted peak.
The terraced lakes of the main valley and the Tibetan village of Shuzheng — the classic morning loop.
Nuorilang's 300-metre curtain and the 80-metre drop of Panda Lake Falls — water is the valley's loudest voice.
Five Flower Lake's submerged trunks and jewel colours — the heart of the Rize Valley.
Long Lake at 3,060 m and the never-freezing Five-Color Pond — the top of the Zezhawa branch.
Mirror Lake's still reflections and the Tibetan lanes of Shuzheng — the quiet classics.
October is the legend — the gold and red of the autumn forests against the blue water, best in the first three weeks. July–August is the lush green season; winter (November 16–March 31) is the discounted blue-ice season at RMB 80. Peak runs April 1–November 15 at RMB 220.
Peak: ticket RMB 220 plus shuttle RMB 90; off-peak: RMB 80 plus RMB 80. Students pay half. In the off-season a second entry costs RMB 20 more (with the RMB 80 shuttle). The park sells tickets from 07:00 peak / 08:00 off-peak; the shuttles run 08:00–19:00 (about 17:00 in winter).
Fly to Jiuzhaigou–Huanglong Airport (40 minutes from Chengdu, about RMB 1,000), then the airport bus (RMB 45, 88 km, 1.5–2 h); or take the Chengdu long-distance coaches from the New South Gate (07:20–08:00, 028-85433609) and Chadianzi stations (07:20/08:00/09:00, 028-87506610) — 8–10 hours, RMB 120–150. Chartered cars run about RMB 1,000.
Two days is the classic stay — one for the Rize and Zezhawa branches, a second entry for the walking boards and the Shuzheng loop at your own pace. One day still covers the icons by shuttle.
No — the valley villages no longer host overnight guests. Sleep in Jiuzhaigou town at the park entrance, from the Jiuzhai Paradise InterContinental (from RMB 1,300) and Sheraton (from RMB 557) to beds at RMB 35 in the self-drive youth hostels.

The first three weeks of October are the golden peak — the town hotels sell out weeks ahead, and so do the good show seats.
The RMB 80 off-season (November 16–March 31) brings the same lakes under ice-blue skies — with a second entry for RMB 20.
The valley villages no longer host guests — every night is a stay in Jiuzhaigou town or Jiuzhaigou county.
Jiuzhaigou lies in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang prefecture of northern Sichuan, 330 km from Chengdu — a Y-shaped valley of 114 lakes, terraced by travertine dams, between 2,000 and 4,500 m.
The valley was long the home of nine Tibetan villages (the 'nine villages' of the name) until logging and then protection reshaped it; the park opened in 1984 and UNESCO listed it in 1992, making it the most famous mountain lake-scape in China.
The Tibetan villages of the park — Shuzheng, Heye and Zezhawa — keep their prayer flags, festivals and the plateau table, while the evening stage of the town carries the song-and-dance tradition to the visitors.
