The 'City of Springs' — more than a hundred natural springs rise inside the old town, from the three jets of Baotu to the mirror of Daming Lake. Capital of Shandong, home of the Lu school of cuisine and the Confucian air of the province, Jinan is the natural gateway to Mount Tai and Qufu: water, willows and a very old city to wander.
The First Spring of China — three columns of water leaping from the pool, a constant 18°C, since the days of the Song poets.
The great lake inside the old city wall — willows, lotus and the Chaoran Tower reflected in the water, the postcard of Jinan.
The town's springs are drinking water — fill a bottle at the public taps and taste the water that made the city famous.
The 'first snack street of Qilu' — grilled skewers, soup buns and the little dishes of the old town, running through the spring quarter.
The 'Buddha mountain' of the city — a thousand Buddhist figures in the cliff caves and the 30-metre golden Maitreya of the new park.
Jinan people greet each other as 'laoshi' (teacher) — the courteous, bookish air of the province of Confucius.
Baotu, Black Tiger, Pearl and the Five Dragon Pools — 136 named springs inside the old city, the densest spring field in China.
Daming Lake — the 'lotus on three sides, willows on four' of the old couplet, ringed by the pavilions and towers of the spring city.
Qianfo Mountain's cliff grottoes and the great golden Maitreya — the temple hill that frames the city.
The salty, honest cooking of Shandong's capital — Furong Street, the old lanes and the bowls of the spring city.
Baotu Spring park is RMB 30 for the classic area (a RMB 45 combo adds the opera hall and the stone museum). Daming Lake's old quarter is free; the boat rides and the Chaoran Tower views are charged separately. Qianfo Mountain is about RMB 30. Black Tiger Spring and the Five Dragon Pools are free.
April–May and September–November are clear and mild, with the springs at their fullest after the rains. The lotus blooms on Daming Lake in July; winter brings a soft steam to the warm springs. Golden weeks are crowded at Baotu.
Two days cover the city — one for the spring quarter and Daming Lake, one for Qianfo Mountain and the old streets. A third day reaches Mount Tai (20 minutes by high-speed rail) or Qufu (1.5 h).
Jinan is a rail hub — about 1.5 h from Beijing and 3 h from Shanghai by high-speed train. Jinan Yaoqiang Airport (30 km) serves domestic routes; the metro and buses cover the city.
The Lu school — braised dishes, sweet-and-sour carp and the famous Caobao pork buns from the old snack street, plus the jujube and pastry shops of the spring quarter.

The rail links to Tai'an and Qufu make Jinan the perfect base for the Shandong triangle — book the day trips together.
Jinan lies at the southern edge of the Yellow River plain, where the limestone of the mountains meets the clay — the artesian pressure that drives more than a hundred springs from the city's core. Four mild seasons; the springs hold a constant 18°C year-round.
Jinan has been a seat of the region for two thousand years — home of the poets Li Qingzhao and Xin Qiji, the 'spring city' praised by every dynasty. It became the capital of Shandong province in the Qing, and the railway hub of the province in the 20th century.
The springs are not scenery but civic life — drinking water, washing water and the willows and teahouses of the lake. 'Lotus on three sides, willows on four, a city of mountains and half a city of lake' — the old couplet still describes the town.
