Mount Hua (Huashan) is the West Sacred Mountain of China - a granite blade of five summits that has been climbed for over two thousand years. The South Peak rises to 2,160 m, the classic route still follows the 'one road since ancient times' through the 370-step Thousand-Foot Precipice, the 46-m Hundred-Foot Gorge and the dragon-back ridge of Canglongling. For the less extreme, cable cars rise from the foot to the North and West peaks, and the sunrise from the East Peak draws crowds all year. Half a day for the plank road, two days for the full five-summit circuit.
The famous cliff-hugging walkway of the South Peak - wooden planks bolted to a vertical face, harness on, 30 minutes of pure theatre.
The 370-step chasm ladder of the classic route - the narrowest, steepest stairway of the mountain.
The dragon-back ridge between the North and Central peaks - a metre-wide crest over a thousand metres of void.
The dawn over the peak sea - the reason most hikers climb at night and reach the top before light.
The Golden Lock Pass and the west cliffs turn bronze at dusk - the classic evening view.
The newest and longest cable car, rising 2,000 vertical metres in 15 minutes - the easy way to the summit.
The cliff walkway of the South Peak - planks, chains and a 700-m drop.
The sunrise over the granite summits - the postcard that draws every climber.
The classic ridge view from the North Peak - the five summits in one sweep.
The red wishing locks of the pass - the tradition of every Huashan climb.
One day works if you use the cable cars - up the West Peak cable, across to the South and East peaks, down the North cable. For the classic full-mountain climb (all five summits) allow two days, camping or staying in the summit hotels; the PDF guide itself recommends 12 hours to 3 days.
RMB 180 in peak season (March 1 - November 30) and RMB 100 off-peak (December 1 - February 28). The ticket covers the West Yue Temple and Xianyu Valley and is valid for 48 hours, but does not include the shuttle bus.
High-speed rail to Huashan North station (about 30 minutes), coaches from the Xi'an East bus station (RMB 33, every 10 minutes), the Tour Route 1 bus from the railway station east square (RMB 28), or drive the Xi'an-Tongguan expressway (about 2 hours). Xi'an Xianyang Airport is 138 km away.
You are harnessed to a steel cable and the boards are bolted - it feels extreme but is well-maintained. If heights are not your thing, the summit views and the West Peak cable alone are worth the trip.
