Mount Emei Travel Guide — the golden summit of the sacred mountain - the 3,099-m Emei of the sea of clouds, the monkey lanes, the cliff temples and the dawn Buddha light

Mount Emei - the 3,099-m 'one of the four sacred Buddhist mountains of China' - rises from the Sichuan plain in a staircase of forest temples: the Baoguo and Fuhu monasteries of the foot, the Qingyin Pavilion's Twin Waterfalls, the Wannian Temple's beamless hall, and the Golden Summit at 3,077 m where the sea of clouds, the dawn light and the Buddhist halo have drawn pilgrims for 1,400 years. It is also a working nature park - the sacred macaques of the trail, the 60-km summit road, the cable cars, the 4,500-m walks between the monasteries and the ski runs of Leidongping in winter. This guide carries the ticket prices, cable and shuttle fares, walk distances, hotels, restaurants and phones from the field guide, so you can plan the climb yourself or have our team arrange it end to end.

Travel Tipsthings to remember

Book the summit night

The Golden Summit hotels fill in season - the dawn needs the night; the phones above work and our team can book for you.

The monkeys own the lanes

Walk the forest stages in groups, keep bags zipped, no feeding, no eye contact with the macaques - the staff at the checkpoints sell the bamboo sticks that mostly keep them away.

The dawn is earlier than you think

Summer sunrise 06:00, winter 07:00 - leave the hotel an hour before and take the cable down after the light, not in the dark.

The walking stages need a day each

Twelve kilometres of temple stairs is a full day - the ridge is a two-day climb for the walkers, not an afternoon.

Cash for the small gates

The temple tickets and the trail stalls are cash-first - keep small notes for the gates and the snacks.

Dress for the summit cold

The 3,000-m summit is 10-15 degrees colder than the foot - a down or fleece layer, gloves and a hat for the dawn.
