A necklace of thirty-two islands in the Bohai strait, twenty minutes by ferry from Penglai — sea cliffs, pebble beaches, seabird islands and a thousand years of fishing life. Changdao is the wild side of the Shandong coast: walk the cliff trails of Jiuzhang, swim the moon-bay, and sail to the island of ten thousand gulls.
The island's great cliff — 70 metres of layered rock above the sea, crossed by the hanging walkway and the sea caves of the strait.
The moon-shaped beach of smooth polished stones — the famous pebble strand that rings like glass underfoot.
The boat to Wan Niao Dao — the seabird island where ten thousand gulls wheel above the cliffs and the ferry.
From the forest cape, watch the yellow water of the Huanghai meet the blue of the Bohai — the visible line of two seas.
The island's home-stays feed you the day's catch — the authentic Changdao night, from about ¥190 per person with meals.
The west-facing cliffs of the island are the classic spot for the Bohai sunset — boats, islands and the sky of the strait.
Jiuzhang, Longzhua and the rocky south coast — the wild cliff scenery of the strait, walked by the coastal trails.
Crescent Bay's famous polished stones, smooth as eggs — the beach that is more mineral than sand.
Wan Niao Dao and the reef islands — breeding colonies of gulls, terns and cormorants that circle the passing boats.
Fishing harbours, boat yards and family guesthouses — the daily life of the islands, lived close to the water.
The islands use a combined-ticket system: the land-route pass covering Jiuzhang Cliff, Crescent Bay, Wangfu Reef, Fengshan, Linhai and the museum is about RMB 90 (RMB 150 with the extra sights). The sea routes — the seabird island boat — cost about RMB 185 including the cruise; the fishing-village (nongjiale) day pass runs RMB 45–60. Children and seniors have half-price and free policies.
Ferries run from Penglai pier to Changdao all day (about 40 minutes, roughly ¥23–45 depending on the boat). Buses from Yantai reach Penglai first (about ¥28); in season, book the ferry for the return the same day.
June to September for swimming, calm seas and the full island season. April–May and September–October are cooler and quieter with the seabirds present; winter seas are rough and many boats stop.
One day covers the north loop (Jiuzhang, Crescent Bay, Wangfu Reef). A second day adds the south coast, the Huang–Bo boundary and the seabird island boat. Staying overnight in a fisherman guesthouse makes the two-day trip easy.
Yes — the ferries are short, the beaches are gentle and the seabird boat is a highlight for children. The island is compact; taxis and hired cars cover the sights in a day.

The morning boats to Wan Niao Dao and the reef islets — gulls wheeling at the rail and the cliffs white with birds; bring a lens cover for the spray.
Crescent Bay's clear water and ringing stones make the island's simplest pleasure — swimmers, stone-skippers and beach picnics.
The nongjiale guesthouses serve the day's catch — haggle at the fish stalls first, or let the host cook the island classics.
Jiuzhang's west trail at dusk — boats returning to the harbours and the sky of the strait, the quiet end of an island day.

Family homes with seafood meals included, from about ¥190 per person a night — the authentic Changdao stay, book through the harbourside agents or our team.
A handful of sea-view hotels on the north island offer rooms and breakfast — from about ¥300 in season, more comfortable but less local.
If the ferries stop for weather, Penglai's hotels take the overflow — the pavilion town is 40 minutes away by boat and makes a natural base.
The island classic — the yellow croaker braised dark with soy and garlic; the fish stalls quote high, haggle and eat it fresh.
The evening grills of the harbourside — whole squid, oysters and clams from the morning boats.
The precious pair of the Bohai — boiled or steamed, from the day's catch at the fish market.
A nongjiale supper of six or eight dishes of the sea, eaten family-style at the host's table — the taste of island life.
Dried scallops, squid and shrimp from the harbour stalls — the standard island souvenir.
Crescent Bay's polished stones, drilled into necklaces and ornaments — the geological memento of the bay.
The island's kelp and pickled seafood from the old shops — the pantry of the strait.

The mythical pavilion town across the strait — Penglai Pavilion, the water city and Sanxian Mountain, 40 minutes by ferry. Full guide on the Penglai page.
The boat to Wan Niao Dao and the reef islets — the gulls, the cormorants and the cliffs of the strait.
Jiuzhang, Crescent Bay and Wangfu Reef in one loop — the classic island trail for a morning or afternoon.
In season the last ferry back can sell out — book the return when you arrive, and keep a weather margin; rough seas cancel the boats.
Prices at the island markets are quoted high — compare three stalls and agree the weight before the fish is weighed.
The seabird boat runs best in the morning, when the gulls are most active — the 08:00 sailing is the classic one.
Crescent Bay's stones are beautiful and rough — beach shoes make the strand walkable; the polished stones cannot be taken in bulk.
The strait wind is constant — a windbreaker even in summer; warm layers for the dawn ferry and the cliff trails.
Changdao county spans thirty-two islands across the Bohai strait between the Jiaodong and Liaodong peninsulas. A maritime climate of strong winds and cool summers; the strait's currents and tides shape both the seabirds and the fishing life.
The islands were a staging point of the ancient sea route and a watch post of the coastal defence; the temple of Mazu on Miao Island dates to the Song and is one of the oldest in the north. Modern Changdao grew with fishing, aquaculture and, since the 2000s, tourism.
Fishermen's shrines, the boat-building yards and the nongjiale tables keep the island life alive — a thousand years of the Bohai, lived in a day's walk.
