Morning bus from Tunxi (about 1 h, ¥25) to the village gates. Start at the South Lake Academy, then the Moon Pond — the crescent water-mirror that made the postcards.
Follow the water channels through the old lanes — the ancestral halls, the carved doorways and the tea houses of the merchant courtyards; lunch on village tofu and lake fish.
Late afternoon walk to the village viewpoint, then the bus back to Tunxi for the old-street dinner.
