Old Summer Palace (Yuanmingyuan) Travel Guide
Yuanmingyuan, the 'Garden of Perfect Brightness', was the Qing emperors' grandest imperial garden — a 350-hectare blend of Chinese landscaping and European-style fountains and palaces. Destroyed by Anglo-French forces in 1860, today it is a serene lakeside park of ruined marble arches and reconstructed pavilions, and a powerful piece of modern Chinese history.
